  • Commentary: What if? Morton's talent intrigues

Jon Mark Beilue, Sports columnist|Updated Nov 7, 2023

When a football season isn’t fulfilling expectations, there is a certain amount of rationalization and wondering that plays out as the season winds down. To put it another way, it’s the “what if” game. For Texas Tech, there may not be a bigger “what if” than what if quarterback Behren Morton never had to deal with nagging injuries? Where would the Raiders be with a healthy Morton? There was a glimpse of that last Thursday in a 35-28 win over TCU. Morton had not played sinc...

While the surprising Yellowjackets, in just their second season of 8-man, were fourth in the five-team district, they’ve strung together four wins in a row, including road playoff upsets of second-seeded Legacy Academy (28-26) and, on Friday, third-seeded Mesilla Val...

  • Found out I'm not prison guard material

Grant McGee, The Staff of The News|Updated Nov 7, 2023

The Lady of the House and I lived by the beach a few years ago. She grew up in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and we thought we’d give Gulf life a try. So we left Clovis in 2015 after we found a place in Pensacola; available Fort Walton Beach real estate wasn’t in abundance and higher priced. Anyway, two years later, we came back to Clovis. One of the tough parts of beach life was finding a job. Not long after we got settled in Florida I went looking for a good paying gig. I interviewed for a job as a newspaper advertising dep...

  • Faith: Good deal to learn from an 8-year-old

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated Nov 7, 2023

The picture is a little fuzzy. It was an action shot and so seriously zoomed in that it’s probably amazing that it’s as clear as it is. But it’s plenty clear enough, and I smile every time I look at it. My next-to-the-youngest grandchild, a precocious little 8-year-old—and, of course, an amazing little beauty in every way—is in mortal combat with another little girl as they’re sliding around on the floor of a basketball court. The ref will soon blow his whistle and signal...

  • Opinion: Numerous unknowns before us

    Rube Render, Local columnist|Updated Nov 7, 2023

Some years ago, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld wrote that there were known/knowns, known/unknowns and unknown/unknowns. Think about it. That’s things we know, things we know that we don’t know and things we don’t know we don’t know. It’s that last one that will put you in really deep kimchi. Jake Sullivan’s “Foreign Affairs” article prepared prior to Oct. 7, noting that the Middle East was quieter than it had been in two decades, is a classic example of unknown unknowns....

But I sold my interest there so I could open this shop with my sons,” Acuña said. Acuña has good feelings about the venture. “I feel great with my sons taking the next...

  • Opinion: Don't be confused: Government has no rights

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Updated Nov 7, 2023

When government clearly goes too far, someone may ask whether or not government has the right to do what it did. The honest answer is always “no.” Government has no rights. It’s not that government has no extra rights; government has no rights of any kind. Individuals who work for government have rights. They have the same rights anyone else has. Rights equal and identical to the rights everyone else enjoys, but no more. These individuals don’t magically get extra rights...

  • Opinion: Time to address China supremacy of vital minerals

    Jim Constantopoulos, Guest columnist|Updated Nov 7, 2023

At the close of World War II, the United States revealed one of the secrets to the Allied success. It was the discovery in 1942 of a large tungsten deposit in the hills outside of Yellow Pine, Idaho. Tungsten is a rare mineral used to harden artillery shells. With those shells, enemy armored vehicles and tanks were blown up. Tungsten was also used to harden bullets, and its discovery in Yellow Pine was credited with having shortened the war by at least one year and saved the lives of a million American soldiers. Gen. Dwight...
