McDonald's husband is in the Air Force and together with their young son, the couple moved here from Florida in January of 2020. Before moving to Clovis, the Oklahoma native only knew one family here - the Crawfords. Together with Megan Crawford, McDonald decided to chase a dream and open a fitness studio in her new home. She was prepared by a marketing degree, prior work...

What: "Joanna Fields: The Culling" By: Wolfren Davis is a Portales resident and Eastern New Mexico University graduate. What it's about: If Joanna Fields can survive a post-apocalyptic wasteland then keeping her two best friends from foolishly getting themselves killed should be easy. It's not. Between kidnappers, a new type of undead, plans that all go awry, and an oddly-named goat, the trio might just be in over their heads....

  • Barely managed to avoid a great temptation

    Karl Terry, Local columnist|Updated Oct 16, 2021

I wrote a couple of weeks ago about my trip to Denver but I didn’t talk about the great temptation. No, it wasn’t the wonderful ice cream I fetched for my wife and I one night but it did occur on that excursion. Downtown those Lime scooters (Lime being the company brand) were everywhere. Young people were weaving in and out of sidewalk traffic and weaving in and out of vehicle traffic and basically causing old folks like myself to fret over being run down by one of the gre...

The board also voted to recommend adding markups of 25 cents a gallon to the cost of self-service low led gasoline at the airport and a markup of 50 cents a gallon for self-service Jet A-1 fuel. In other business, the board recommended c...

    Kathleen Stinson, Staff writer|Updated Oct 16, 2021

The following is a Q&A with candidates for District 1 of the Clovis school board. Kyle Snider is running for re-election against Sharon Epps and Rosa Sanchez. Candidates were each asked the same questions via phone. The election is Nov. 2. Why did you decide to run? Epps: I decided to run because I have a passion for Clovis schools and student achievement is my No. 1 goal. I am a native of Clovis and attended all 12 years of school in Clovis. Sanchez: I decided to run because there are issues currently on the surfaces and in...

  • Opinion: Voting has power to shape decisions

    Walt Rubel, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 16, 2021

Every four years, Americans flock to the polls in droves to elect a new president. Last year, more than 155 million people cast their ballots, most of them just happy that the campaign was finally over, at least for a minute. Two years later, we have the midterm elections, where we elect a new governor, and all members of both the state and U.S. House are up for re-election. Next year, voters will get to weigh in for the first time on the governor’s aggressive public health order to combat COVID-19. In odd-numbered years l...

  • Opinion: 'Media' not demeaning Trump supporters

    Leonard Pitts, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 16, 2021

Dear Mike Pence: Most of them are fervid adherents of bizarre conspiracy theories and fascist dogmas that might yet burn this country down. Many of them spew a noxious slurry of racial, religious and sexual hatreds that defame the principles we purport to hold dear. And on Jan. 6 of this year, a mob of them broke into the U.S. Capitol. They injured police officers. They drove Congress from its own house. They looted government property. They called for federal officials — i...

  • Opinion: College firsts should thank their families

    Christine Flowers, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 16, 2021

I was watching TV the other night, and one of those ubiquitous campaign ads popped up. This time, it was a female candidate for the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, discussing all of her accomplishments. Other than the fact that it was refreshingly positive and didn’t engage in any vitriol there was nothing particularly notable about the ad. But something stuck with me, something that others might consider completely innocuous but that has been bothering me for years. The c...

  • Opinion: Aptitudes should be acknowledged

    Rich Lowry, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 16, 2021

Gifted students have to check their privilege and get over themselves. It doesn’t matter whether they are minorities. It doesn’t matter whether they were brought to the United States as children. It doesn’t matter how poor their families may be. It doesn’t matter if they have inspiring personal stories. It doesn’t matter how hard they work. No, the very fact that they are getting accommodated in classrooms and programs that don’t necessarily represent the demographic...

  • Opinion: Elected officials exploiting death

    Rube Render, Local columnist|Updated Oct 16, 2021

In less than three months, Jan. 6 will be upon us again. You remember Jan. 6, the day the news media report as the deadliest insurrection since the Civil War, don’t you? The insurrection that resulted in the arrest of hundreds of protesters to be charged with attempting to overthrow the government. The same insurrection that resulted in the death of five people. If you Google, “How many protesters from Jan. 6 are being charged with insurrection?” you will be rewarded with...

  • Opinion: Abbott, Schmitt orders irrational, inconsistent

    St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 16, 2021

Republican politicians once defended a “hands-off” approach to local government and entrepreneurship. Local governmental units like school boards knew how best to educate and protect local kids without meddling from distant capitals, went the thinking, just as private businesses knew best how to make their own workplace policies. That’s apparently out the window with today’s GOP in places like Missouri, where Attorney General Eric Schmitt is suing school districts to prohibit mask mandates, and Texas, where Gov. Greg Abbott...

  • Band pulls out of competition

the Staff of The News|Updated Oct 16, 2021

CLOVIS — After wins in its first three competitions, the Clovis High band decided to pull out of its fourth scheduled competition at Saturday’s Pageant of Bands in Albuquerque. In a letter to the band boosters, Director Bill Allred said the cancellation was made with its Oct. 23 trip to Albuquerque for the Zia Marching Festival in mind. Allred highlighted two reasons for the decision — first as a measure to avoid any unnecessary risk or quarantines, and second from a feeling the students and staff had earned a break befor...
