  • Russian invasion reminds us: Do good, seek peace

    Bob Farkas, Guest columnist|Updated Mar 8, 2022

I never met my grandfather on my mother's side. I never met any of the male members of her family. They were crushed by Soviet tanks during a round of Russian adventurism. My mother, her sister and her mom endured Russian assaults, gunfire and artillery; they hid under floorboards, in basements and in forests as they made their way out of Hungary in 1948 to escape the occupation of their homeland. When I was a kid, I used to stay at my great-grandmother's apartment. Every...

  • Curry cannabis ordinance headed back to public hearing

Grant McGee, The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 8, 2022

Curry County's cannabis ordinance is headed back for a public hearing in April, the same month that New Mexico's recreational cannabis status goes into effect. The decision was made at Tuesday's Curry County Commission meeting because of a question from an area resident at the commission's February meeting regarding distances between a cannabis business and such properties as schools, churches and such. Such distances are not outlined in the County's ordinance as it stands...

  • Faith: Russia, Ukraine leaders study in contrast

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated Mar 8, 2022

What an astounding contrast. In the midst of the sights and sounds cascading from Ukraine, I think we’ve all been struck by a stark contrast. Most of us in this world are not used to being bombarded daily with actual bombs, but we’ve become sadly accustomed to the carpet-bombing of common sense. Everything from gender to the multiplication tables is held to be incredibly fluid (“incredibly” literally means “unbelievably”). It’s as if esteeming ourselves as gods of our own “p...

  • Hounds capture wild series

the Staff of The News|Updated Mar 8, 2022

PORTALES - At the end of a wild weekend, Eastern New Mexico University's baseball team came out of it with a Lone Star Conference series win. The Greyhounds capped the four-game set, featuring 90 combined runs and two extra-inning tilts, by holding on late for an 11-9 victory over Texas-Permian Basin on Sunday at Greyhound Field. ENMU (5-11, 4-10 LSC) took three games from the Falcons (4-17, 3-17), outscoring them 40-36 and outhitting them 49-41, with six triples and 18...

  • ENMU softball competitive against ranked foes

the Staff of The News|Updated Mar 8, 2022

PORTALES - Eastern New Mexico University's softball team opened its home and Lone Star Conference schedules over the weekend by welcoming a pair of nationally ranked-teams to Greyhound Softball Field, including No. 1 Texas-Tyler on Sunday. Suffice it to say, the Greyhounds gave a reasonably good account of themselves. They earned a split with No. 23 Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday, winning 8-5 and losing 9-1, before dropping 6-3 and 11-0 decisions to Tyler. ENMU (8-12 overall) fe...

  • Cats fall late to Belen in tourney finale

the Staff of The News|Updated Mar 8, 2022

HOBBS — Clovis High’s baseball team wasn’t able to salvage one on Saturday in a six-team tournament hosted by Hobbs H.S. Teams from the southern part of New Mexico faced squads from the north, and the northern contingents got the better of the Wildcats in the three-game slate. After losing to Los Lunas 8-1 on Thursday, Clovis absorbed a 14-0 setback to Rio Rancho Cleveland on Friday. Then on Saturday, a seventh-inning rally fell short and the Cats (1-3) lost to Belen 7-5. “After a tough one yesterday, the kids came out and...

  • Buffs to face Elida next

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 8, 2022

MELROSE - Step one was easy enough. Suffice it to say, though, it gets tougher from here for the Melrose Buffaloes. Seeded seventh in the Class 1A boys 16-team state tournament field, Melrose cruised to a 69-30 win over 10th-seeded Springer on Saturday afternoon. Next up is No. 2 Elida in a 6 p.m. quarterfinal matchup today at Elida. That winner moves into a 3:30 p.m. semifinal on Friday at Bernalillo H.S., seeking a berth in Saturday's 6 p.m. title clash at The Pit in...

the Staff of The News|Updated Mar 8, 2022

LAS CRUCES — Clovis High’s girls were positioned to sneak out of town with a Class 5A round-of-16 victory on Friday night. The Lady Wildcats just weren’t able to close the deal. The fifth-seeded Lady Bulldawgs (22-7) advanced to a Tuesday night quarterfinal match at fourth-seeded Farmington while Clovis, the No. 12 seed in the 16-team field, saw its campaign end at 18-11. “I th...

  • Lady Rams cruise into quarterfinals

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 8, 2022

PORTALES — Normally, Portales High’s girls are pretty solid on the defensive end. Friday night, they were absolutely stifling. After falling behind 2-0 more than three minutes in, Portales held Los Alamos to four points the rest of the half and went on to a 42-26 victory in a Class 4A round-of-16 state tournament game at the Ram Athletic Center. Seeded fourth, the Lady Rams (21-5) earned themselves another game at the RAC on Tuesday night, where they hosted fifth-seeded Highland (21-5), a 48-45 winner at home on Friday ove...

“National Read Across America Day” was March 2. Launched in 1998 by the National Education Association, it has come to be a well-established annual celebration in school districts across the nation. The idea is to celebrate reading by carving out a special time to motivate students to read. This event also happens to coincide with the birthday of Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, whose stories and characters are sprinkled throughout the event. In our district, man...

  • Opinion: Learn the complexities of issues

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Updated Mar 8, 2022

Back in the 1950s, in the thick of the Cold War, Nikita Khrushchev, the leader of the Soviet Union at that time, famously said, “We will take America without firing a shot. We do not have to invade the U.S. We will destroy you from within.” Of course, they didn’t destroy us. The U.S. ultimately won the Cold War and saved the world for democracy. But it’s a new day now, and such a threat may be more real than ever before — not because of the threat that Russia now poses through cyber-attacks and military incursions, but becau...

  • Opinion: Pre-primary vote counting bungled and pointless

The Santa Fe New Mexican, Syndicated content|Updated Mar 8, 2022

At least Steve Pearce flexed his ineptitude during a pointless exercise. Pearce, chairman of the New Mexico Republican Party, oversaw ponderous and bungled vote-counting at his organization’s pre-primary nominating convention. In truth, Pearce’s failures didn’t amount to much of significance. They instead raised the question of why New Mexico even bothers staging pre-primary conventions. Only political junkies who are nostalgic for smoke-filled rooms and the shenanigans of ward bosses see value in events like the one Pearc...

  • Opinion: Shame Ukraine, Russia suffering

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Updated Mar 8, 2022

It’s crazy how many people still imagine political government is credible or legitimate. How many take it at its word, even while watching events around the world today. Even the national media corporations who report on political news often simply parrot government’s story instead of doing their job by questioning everything it says -- except when they have a vendetta against a specific politician or party. Social media and the entertainment industry may even be worse. The...
