    David Stevens, Publisher|Updated Oct 23, 2021

We will never know much about her life, which ended after just 19 years. We also don't know much about her death, though much has been written about that. What we do know is her memory is forever being reserved by family members who still care about her more than 140 years after her passing. This is the story, as best it can be pieced together, of Juanita Martinez Garrett. She's been in the news lately because the Wild West History Association and family members recently...

  • Opinion: Must treat China issue as Cold War

    Rich Lowry, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 23, 2021

The Biden administration is hesitant to call our competition with China a new Cold War, even though Beijing has zero qualms about making the parallels with our decades-long struggle with the Soviet Union abundantly clear. We are once again discussing a “Sputnik moment,” a nuclear arms race, and a missile gap — all throwbacks to the 1950s-1980s — thanks to China’s aggressive pursuit of military capabilities designed to deter and defeat the United States. Whatever Beijing may sa...

  • Opinion: Hoping good government will win out over good politics

    Walt Rubel, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 23, 2021

Democrats in the New Mexico Legislature will soon have to choose between good government and good politics. According to the group’s website, its mission is to “propose district lin...

  • Opinion: My people value facts, reason

    Leonard Pitts, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 23, 2021

I’ve got something to say about “you people.” That, as you may recall, was how I referred, in a recent column, to Mike Pence and others who have apparently sworn an oath to preserve, protect and defend the Florida taco bowl connoisseur who used to be president. It left a handful of readers well and truly irked. As one of them put it: “’You people?’ How dare you lump all Trump voters like that.” Well, dear reader, I cannot tell a lie. That objectifying language was no accide...

  • Opinion: Twitter mobs are ephemeral and yet deadly to reputation

    Christine Flowers, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 23, 2021

It’s easy these days to say that social media is toxic. People act in ways they’d never do in real life, because it isn’t real life. They act like feral wolves, because they can. The Twitter police don’t carry guns, and their badges are imaginary. In fact, social media is one big imaginary world, and we’re all way too wrapped up in things that don’t matter — the opinions expressed by strangers in public. Earlier this month, Jon Gruden’s life exploded because of some private...
