  • Portales man sentenced to seven years for vehicular homicide

the Staff of The News|Updated Apr 25, 2021

PORTALES — A Portales man was sentenced Wednesday to seven years in prison on a 2018 vehicular homicide charge, with court records indicating an intent to appeal the case. Ricardo Navarrete, 34, reached a plea agreement on the charge in March. He has been released from the Roosevelt County Adult Detention Center on a $10,000 appeal bond posted Friday. He was indicted by a Roosevelt County jury in May 2018 on allegations he caused the death of Jose Saldana-Pinales by driving while under the influence. The sentence from D...

  • Local: Chauvin verdict 'step in the right direction'

    Joe Siess, Staff writer|Updated Apr 24, 2021

CLOVIS — The conviction last week of Derek Chauvin was a “step in the right direction,” for police accountability. But the struggle for racial justice isn’t over. That’s according to Clovis’ Shaundra Mahan, who helped organize local protests against racism and police violence last summer. “Definitely not,” Mahan said. “Considering we are in 2021 and this is the same battle that my parents, who are well into their 60s, as well as their parents, have been fighting and seeing going on with police brutality within their comm...

  • Lady Rams close in on 4-4A title after rallying past Goddard in OT

    Dave Wagner, Staff writer|Updated Apr 24, 2021

PORTALES - With a chance to all but clinch the District 4-4A title, and a spot in the Class 4A state tournament, Portales High's girls were no match early for the overall quickness of Roswell Goddard. That all changed after halftime, though, and the Lady Rams pulled off an impressive comeback in posting a 63-56 overtime victory at the Ram Athletic Center. At worst, Portales could now finish in a tie for the top spot with Goddard (5-3, 2-2 district), but the Lady Rams aren't li...

  • Buffs subdue Fort Sumner in district tilt

the Staff of The News|Updated Apr 24, 2021

MELROSE - Defending Class 1A state boys champion Melrose kept steamrolling toward a state berth on Friday with a 72-58 District 6-1A victory over Fort Sumner. Seniors Tate Sorgen (28 points, 16 rebounds) and Devon Bailey (16 and 10) posted double-doubles for Melrose (7-0, 6-0 district), while senior Trace Jackson chipped in 13 points. The Buffs have a challenging finishing schedule, though - after hosting non-district Gateway Christian on Saturday, they wrap up the regular cam...

  • PHS tracksters do well in season opener

the Staff of The News|Updated Apr 24, 2021

CARLSBAD — Portales High track coach Quintin Wilson said he was a bit surprised — in a good way — by his team’s showing on Friday in a season-opening quad track meet with Roswell High, Hobbs and the host Cavemen. “We had some good performances,” he said after the Rams finished second in boys competition and the Lady Rams third on the girls’ side. “I felt the kids competed, and that’s all you can ask of them.” For the boys, senior Traise Cain was a triple winner, taking pole vault at 13 feet, 6 inches; high jump at 5-10 a...

  • Cavegirls notch win over Clovis

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated Apr 24, 2021

CLOVIS - Allie Myers filled up the stat sheet for Carlsbad Friday night. The Clovis Wildcats, meanwhile, could only seem to foul theirs up. Myers and the visiting Cavegirls took control early, never trailing in the District 4-5A matchup and leading by double figures for the final 18:45 of a 49-25 blowout at Rock Staubus Gymnasium. Myers, a 5-foot-11 sophomore, had 16 points on 6-of-14 shooting with 11 rebounds, five steals and a pair of blocks for Carlsbad (6-2, 3-1...

  • Shorthanded Cats fall at Carlsbad

the Staff of The News|Updated Apr 24, 2021

CARLSBAD - The first time the teams met, Carlsbad came in shorthanded with several players out due to COVID-19 quarantines. This time, the roles were reversed. Clovis High's boys were down their two leading scorers on Friday night and absorbed their fourth consecutive loss in a 46-37 District 4-5A setback to the Cavemen. Clovis (5-5, 1-3 district) has essentially been eliminated from postseason contention with two games left, while Carlsbad (5-3, 2-2) still has at least a...

  • Rams pull out 59-56 win at Goddard

the Staff of The News|Updated Apr 24, 2021

ROSWELL — It’s probably a little to late to help get them into the Class 4A state tournament, but Portales High’s boys pulled off a nice District 4-4A road win on Friday night. Junior Greydon Rigsby scored 17 points and senior Chanden Neese added 10 as the Rams earned their first district with a 59-56 triumph over Roswell Goddard. Portales, down by seven points early, led 34-29 at halftime and stretched that 10 with the first five points of the third period. Goddard made a couple of runs, and pulled to 53-52 on a 3-pointer by...

  • Opinion: Celebrating small, personal pandemic victory

    Walt Rubel, Syndicated content|Updated Apr 24, 2021

I will be fully vaccinated in a couple of weeks. The pandemic, for me, is almost over, and I’m incredibly grateful to the brilliant men and women who developed these safe and effective vaccines. But this doesn’t feel like victory. Until March of last year, Americans saw pandemics as something that happen every few years in Africa or Asia. We were confident that our modern healthcare system would protect us. The notion of more than 562,000 U.S. deaths, and still growing every day, was inconceivable then. We’ve been livin...

  • Opinion: Justice shouldn't be this difficult

    Leonard Pitts, Syndicated content|Updated Apr 24, 2021

I sat there trying to remember how to breathe. I suspect I had that in common with people — particularly African-American people — all over the country. Didn’t we all hold our breath as we awaited the verdict in the trial of Derek Chauvin? Then that verdict was read. The former Minneapolis police officer was found guilty on all three counts in the death of George Floyd and was promptly handcuffed and led off to jail. On television, people shouted and prayed, cranking their...

  • Opinion: Can't support police without noting failures

    Christine Flowers, Syndicated content|Updated Apr 24, 2021

At a time when police are being attacked on all sides for brutality, racism, recklessness and all sorts of social sins and criminal acts, I hesitate to write this column. I hesitate, not because I think that what I am about to say is wrong, but because words have been used as weapons and in the wrong hands, they misfire and they wound. I hesitate, because the very last thing I want to do is wound the good men and women of the fragile blue line. On Dec. 5, 2020, Caron Nazario,...

  • Opinion: Calls of racism cynical power play

    Michael Reagan, Syndicated content|Updated Apr 24, 2021

So let me get this straight. According to the president, according to the Democrats, and according to the liberal media, half my country is racist, my political party is racist and I’m a racist. That’s the message they’ve all been telling me in the wake of the guilty verdict in the trial of Derek Chauvin, the Minneapolis cop charged with killing George Floyd. They say because I’m white, I’m an accomplice in George Floyd’s death. They say because I’m white, I’m guilty for creat...

  • Opinion: Bush immigration views out of touch

    Rich Lowry, Syndicated content|Updated Apr 24, 2021

It’s not 2007 again. But apparently no one has told George W. Bush. To coincide with the release of a book of his paintings of immigrants, “Out of Many, One,” the former Republican president wrote an op-ed in The Washington Post plugging the sort of immigration package that went down to defeat in both his administration and in the administration of his successor, Barack Obama. Bush is an unusually sincere, earnest politician whose views on immigration are deeply felt and h...

  • Opinion: Money won't put allegations out of mind

    Albuquerque Journal, Syndicated content|Updated Apr 24, 2021

The settlement between Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and former campaign spokesman James Hallinan, who accused her of inappropriate conduct during a campaign meeting, is right out of the informal PR manual on how to deal with potential fallout from a sordid allegation. First, say the claim is absolutely without merit, even scurrilous and defamatory. Then, open up a checkbook and pay the person making the allegations, with details shrouded in confidentiality. Finally, say the settlement was made only to avoid “the continuing dis...

  • Water board appoints Clovis mayor as chair

The board also appointed Clovis Mayor Mike Morris to serve as chair of the authority board, during its regular meeting on Thursday. For the last couple of years, the authority has successfully brought in around $15 million in federal f...

  • Officials: Counties overall maintaining, improving

    Joe Siess|Updated Apr 24, 2021

CLOVIS — During a regular COVID-19 and vaccine update, state officials said that overall, the majority of counties in New Mexico either stayed the same, or improved as far as coronavirus cases are concerned. However, some counties have regressed. New Mexico Department of Health Secretary Tracie Collins, and Human Services Department Secretary David Scrase both spoke on the pandemic situation in the state during the health department’s meeting on Wednesday. State data showed that 24 counties either maintained their pre...

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated Apr 24, 2021

CLOVIS — The Clovis City Commission had what will likely be its shortest meeting of 2021, with six commissioners quickly authorizing city administration to apply for a federal water grant Friday morning. In a matter of seven minutes, the commission gave the go-ahead to apply for up to $3.2 million from the Bureau of Reclamation. The WaterSMART grant program is designated for water reclamation and reuse projects, which City Manager Justin Howalt explained was tailor-made for the city’s ongoing effluent reuse project. The eff...

PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico University employees can expect a slight bump in their paychecks come July 1, although the university is anticipating they’ll see a slight reduction in the number of students they educate in the 2021-22 school year. Following a 45-minute discussion on the finer points, ENMU regents unanimously approved a revenue budget of $52.558 million, about $1.2 million up from last year. Significant changes, Vice President of Business Affairs Scott Smart said, included a 2.5% compensation increase for emp...

PORTALES — After a 40-minute closed session, Eastern New Mexico University’s regents decided one more year with Patrice Caldwell in the chancellor’s spot was its best plan going forward. By a 5-0 vote, the board voted Friday evening to extend Caldwell’s contract one additional year to the end of the 2022-23 school year. “Thank you for your vote of confidence and trust,” said Caldwell, who was elevated to the position almost a year ago to the day — April 24, following the resignation of Jeff Elwell — and had the interim tag...
