Buffs subdue Fort Sumner in district tilt

MELROSE - Defending Class 1A state boys champion Melrose kept steamrolling toward a state berth on Friday with a 72-58 District 6-1A victory over Fort Sumner.

Seniors Tate Sorgen (28 points, 16 rebounds) and Devon Bailey (16 and 10) posted double-doubles for Melrose (7-0, 6-0 district), while senior Trace Jackson chipped in 13 points. The Buffs have a challenging finishing schedule, though - after hosting non-district Gateway Christian on Saturday, they wrap up the regular campaign by hosting Clovis Christian (6-2, 4-2) on Tuesday and visiting Fort Sumner (6-2, 4-2) on Thursday.

Melrose led 20-13 at the quarter and stayed in control for most of the remaining time.

For the Foxes, solphomore Clay Norman scored 19 points and senior Chance Drake added 10.

In other boys tilts on Friday:

Dora 53, Grady 38 - The host Coyotes opened a 14-5 lead at the quarter and stayed comfortably in front the rest of the way in a non-district matchup.

Sophomore Steven Masini scored 17 points for Dora (3-5), which snapped a five-game losing streak, while senior Will Rooney and sophomore Bryson Paxton added 11 apiece. For the Bronchos (2-7), freshman Zane Rush collected 18 points.

Elida 72, Des Moines 55 - In a non-district neutral-court game at San Jon H.S., the Tigers (8-1) built a 17-point halftime lead with a 22-9 run in the second period en route to their eighth consecutive win.

Junior Rylan Creighton led Elida with 24 points, while senior Teagan Burton had 16 and junior Gavin Hartman 11. For the Demons (4-4), with a 10-man roster that includes one senior, seven freshmen and two eighth-graders, freshman Caleb Sumpter led the way with 25 points.

Gateway Christian 49, Floyd 31 - In District 4-1A, the host Warriors (3-4, 3-3 district) pulled away steadily, finishing it off by outscoring the Broncos 16-8 in the final segment.

Junior Hurley Breedyk led Gateway with 21 points and junior Luke Tipton chipped in 10. For Floyd (4-3, 4-3), senior Eli Terry scored 17 points and senior Chance Essary finished with eight.

In girls action on Friday:

Grady 55, Dora 27 - The Lady Bronchos outscored the host Lady Coyotes 31-9 over the middle two segments to take charge in non-district play.

Senior Isabelle Martinez paced Grady (4-6) with 14 points, while seniors Teryn Foote and Krissy Grau tossed in 13 and 10, respectively. For Dora (2-4), coming off a 35-34 non-district road win over Hagerman on Tuesday, freshman Hanna Wade posted a team-high eight points.
