Cavegirls notch win over Clovis

CLOVIS - Allie Myers filled up the stat sheet for Carlsbad Friday night. The Clovis Wildcats, meanwhile, could only seem to foul theirs up.

Myers and the visiting Cavegirls took control early, never trailing in the District 4-5A matchup and leading by double figures for the final 18:45 of a 49-25 blowout at Rock Staubus Gymnasium.

Myers, a 5-foot-11 sophomore, had 16 points on 6-of-14 shooting with 11 rebounds, five steals and a pair of blocks for Carlsbad (6-2, 3-1 district). She also hit three of the team's eight 3-pointers.

"We know she's a great player," Carlsbad coach Matt Enloe said of Myers, one of two double-figure scorers for the Cavegirls along with Aaliyah Jones' 12-point effort. "When she plays hard, she's tough to stop."

Clovis shot 6-of-42 on the night, including 1-of-18 from beyond the arc, and had separate stretches of 8:13 and 7:46 without a field goal.

Wildcat coach Jeff Reed credited Carlsbad's zone defense for making Clovis rush 3-point shots, while admitting exasperation on a night where the girls fought hard but no rotation or adjustment changed the narrative.

"What are you going to do," Reed said, "if you don't score? I was talking to the girls at halftime about how we needed to chip away offensively. I felt like the first two or three minutes of the third, we dominated. I look up, and we're still down 12."

Senior Hanna Nussbaumer scored 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting, but only four other Clovis players scored and none had more than four points.

Enloe credited some of that to an off-night for Clovis, and some of that to his team's defensive effort.

"We really stepped up our defense," Enloe said. "We worked hard in practice on our pressure and our 2-3, and tonight it showed."

Carlsbad, which shot 14-for-37 overall and 7-for-13 from 3-point land, pushed the lead to 21 early in the fourth.

Both teams were slated for action Saturday, with Carlsbad returning home to face Portales and Clovis heading to Lovington.

Clovis 62, Roswell High 35 (Tuesday) - Nussbaumer scored 17 points while freshman guard Zarai Lewis funneled in a personal-best 12 on four of the Lady Cats' season-best eight 3-pointers at The Rock.

Ten players scored for each team, but the Lady Coyotes (3-3, 0-3 district) were led by just six points from junior Amariah Toscano.

"We came out and played great from the beginning," Reed said of his squad. "It was probably our best shooting night of the season.

"We had a great game plan, and we executed it for the most part. No. 25 (sophomore Kaitlyn Olguin) had 30 against (Roswell) Goddard, and we held her to five. Skyler Jordan did a heck of a job on her."

Clovis led 14-3 at the quarter and expanded the margin to 30 points late in the third segment.

"It makes a big difference when you're scoring points," Reed said. "I think they were real excited to be playing at home. I think we realized we have to take advantage of these games because we've only got a couple left."
