Buffs, Bronchos split doubleheader

MELROSE – Melrose pushed over a run in the bottom of the sixth inning on Thursday and edged Grady 8-7 for a split of their District 3-1A baseball doubleheader.

In the opener, the Bronchos used a pair of big innings to post a 13-5 win over the Buffaloes. Melrose (9-5, 4-2 district) came in ranked No. 2 and Grady (9-4, 2-4) was No. 4 in MaxPreps' Class 1A poll.

Junior Cy Draper went 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored in Game 2 for Melrose, while senior Dathan Yeary finished 2-for-2 with a double and two runs, senior Gray Brandon went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI and junior Briar Larson was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run.

Senior Xavier Romero, juniors Deakin Ragland and Jayce Garrett and freshman Noah Stanfield all had a pair of hits for Grady, including doubles by Ragland, Garrett and Stanfield. Ragland scored three runs and Garrett two, while Romero knocked in a pair

In the opener, the Bronchos posted six runs in the fourth and five in the seventh, pounding out 14 hits. Freshman Hays Rush went 3-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and two walks, while Garrett and freshmen Andre Garcia, Zander Ciancio and Caden Croy had two hits each and combined for four runs and five RBIs.

For Melrose, which had six hits, sophomore Jaxon Odom was 3-for-3 and junior Noah DeVaney 2-for-4, with each knocking in a run.

In District 2-1A tilts on Friday:

Dora 24-18, Floyd 8-3 – In a battle of teams seeking their first wins at Floyd, the visiting Coyotes had the better of it, ending the first game in five frames and the second in six on the 10-run rule.

Dora (2-7, 2-5) scored 13 runs in the second for a 17-1 advantage in Game 1. Junior Roddy Neal went 5-for-5 with a t ripple and his younger brother, freshman Timmy Neal, was 4-for-5 while eighth-grader Isaac Jasso finished 3-for-4 and drove in six runs.

Junior Jimmy Lovato went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run for Floyd (0-10, 0-7), eighth-grader Archer Knox finished 2-for-2 and scored twice and eighth-grader Rey Duarte went 1-for-2 with a triple, an RBI and a run.

In the nightcap, Dora led 3-2 before scoring four in the fourth, three in the fifth and eight in the sixth. Freshman Rylan Harris went 5-for-5 with a triple, three RBIs and two runs while juniors Aaron Combs and Ashton Davis and Timmy Neal all had four hits and combined for six RBIs and eight runs.

Lovato finished 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs for the Broncos.

Gateway Christian 10, Elida 0 – At Elida, the Roswell-based Warriors broke open the game with four in the fifth and two in the sixth to end it on the run rule.

Jaybn Laduca went 2-for-2, junior Caleb Moore went 2-for-3 and sophomore Samuel Waide was 1-for-3 for Gateway (12-5, 8-0 district), and they combined to drive in six runs. Freshman Coda Cathey was 2-for- 3 for the Tigers (6-5, 5-3).

In Tuesday baseball:

Santa Rosa 10-11, Texico 9-15 – In District 6-2A, the visiting Lions (19-2, 7-1) – ranked No. 1 in Class 2A by MaxPreps – erased a 4-1 deficit with nine runs over the final three frames in the opener before seeing a 17-game winning streak come to an end in Game 2. Santa Rosa bounced back on Thursday at home, routing Pecos 12-1 and 13-3.

The Wolverines (6-9, 3-3) rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh in the opener but came up short.

Santa Rosa won despite collecting only five hits. Sophomore Joshua Cordova had a double and two RBIs, senior Jykub Gage went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored and junior Daniel Zamora was 1-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Meantime, Texico had 12 hits, with senior Daltyn Cain going 3-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored and senior Easton Cooper finishing 3-for-5 and driving in three runs. Senior Erik Davalos added 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.

In Game 2, Santa Rosa led 11-5 after scoring three times in the fifth, but Texico tied it with six in the bottom half and added four in the sixth to win it.

Cooper finished 5-for-5 with a triple and an RBI for the Wolverines while Davalos was 3-for-3 with three doubles, five RBIs and a run scored.

Gage went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored for the Lions, and Cordova ended up 2-for-3 with a three-run double and five RBIs.

In Tuesday area softball:

Eunice16-16, Dora 1-1 – In District 4/1-2A at Eunice, the Lady Coyotes scored a run in the top of the first in each game, but it was all Lady Cardinals after that.

Senior Kelli Stinson and sophomore Peyton Williams both went 3-for-3 and scored twice in Game 1 for Eunice (13-8, 7-3). The game ended in the bottom of the third on the 15-run rule after three.

Freshman Karen Inge was 2-for-2 for Dora (5-8, 0-7) and scored the Lady Coyotes' lone run on a first-inning single by senior Faith Jasso.

In the nightcap, the Lady Cardinals erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to end it again on the 15-run rule. Junior McKayla Pierce and sophomore Melanie Nieto each were 3-for-4 and scored three times for Loving, with Pierce hitting three doubles and Nieto posting a double and a single.

Jasso, Karen Inge and her twin, Kinsley Inge, all went 1-for-2 for Dora, with Jasso's single again knocking in Karen Inge.
