Lady Rams absorb three setbacks in District 4-4A action

Freshman Addyson Mayberry got the Portales High softball team off to a flying start on Tuesday night.

Mayberry walloped a three-run homer in the first inning and the early lead held up for a while in a District 4-4A matchup against visiting Artesia. But the Lady Bulldogs, blanked until the fourth, took the lead with a four-run fifth and went on to a 13-3 victory.

Mayberry followed singles by sophomore Skyler Massey and junior Myleigh Banda with her round-tripper. But PHS had only one other hit in the matchup – a single by freshman Annaleah Lujan.

Artesia (13-7, 2-2 district) outhit the Lady Rams 16-4. Eighth-grader Katrin Marquez worked the final five innings for the Lady Bulldogs for the win, allowing two hits with no walks and eight strikeouts.

Junior Kinsley Rodriguez went 3-for-4 and scored a run for Artesia. Senior McKenna Morrison was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while junior Makayla Lujan was 2-for-3 with four runs scored and senior Perseis Aguilar went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored.

In a Friday night twin bill at Lovington, the district-leading and third-ranked Lady Wildcats (20-3, 6-0) posted a 17-2, 10-0 sweep over the Lady Rams.

Portales hosts Roswell Goddard for a 5 p.m. single game on Tuesday, then travels to Artesia for two games starting at 5 p.m. on Friday to wrap up the regular year.
