  • Cold start costly in Hounds' loss to Aggies

LAWTON, Okla. — Five field goals in a half is not exactly a recipe to success. Eastern New Mexico University’s men tried valiantly to overcome that unsightly first-half stat on Saturday, closing a 17-point deficit to two late in the game before Cameron pulled away to a 64-55 win in a Lone Star Conference crossover matchup. Junior guard Jacquez Williams hit 5-of-11 from 3-point range and finished with 17 points as the Aggies (7-1) overcame a poor shooting performance of their own. ENMU (4-4) warmed up to 48 percent (... Full story

  • President's actions don't warrant Nobel

Freedom New Mexico To his credit, in his acceptance address, President Obama addressed several of the ironies involved in his being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for Peace with humility, humor and a thoughtful disquisition on the delicate relationship among conflict, war, fanaticism and peace. Although he made the best of the situation, there was still something ironic about a head of state involved in two wars, one of which he had chosen to escalate a scant nine days before, accepting a prize ostensibly designed to honor...

  • Letter to the Editor: Next step is to combat sun's effects

Next step is to combat sun's effects I have come to a new awareness that we really have global warming, and nowI know what is the singular most significant major contributor to this climatic change. As a result, I have a quick and fairly simple solution to this warming catastrophe. On a few recent days, the sun was nowhere to be seen. The clouds were thick and the light was diminished by about 30 percent. Did you notice it got really really cold? Do you remember it gets colder every day that we have thick clouds? Ha! It... Full story

  • Letter to the Editor: Students deserve full attention

Students deserve full attention I attended the annual Lindsey Middle School Concert on Tuesday evening and would like to commend the teachers and their students for their hard work and wonderful program. I wish the audience’s behavior extended the courtesy to the students that they deserved. During the 35-minute concert, not 30 seconds went by without children and adults running in and out of the doors, which was extremely disruptive to those of us trying to listen. I am sure other school concerts and programs will be held i... Full story

  • Changing weather not an exaggeration

One of the favorite sayings in eastern New Mexico is “If you don’t like the weather here, wait a few minutes and it’ll change.” Man, we sure got a good example of that last week. With world leaders also meeting about climate change this past week we were able to prove, in a day’s time, right here, that weather is still running the complete cycle. Tuesday before the sun came up was a crisp calm. Frost began to show itself on the lawn and the neighbors’ rooftops as dawn crept in while I drank my morning coffee at the dining... Full story

  • Daughter will get support needed

This week 'an official evaluator' informed me that my daughter Eva could have a learning disability related to her auditory processes and possibly including language. She then added that perhaps Eva doesn't have a learning disability. Maybe she's too young and we need more tests to figure out what's going on. Or maybe there's something there. Then again, there's the possibility that Eva's timing is simply different than other children. The information was as clear to understand as the one presented in the health care bill... Full story

  • The Kid Boss

Photos courtesy of Nita Stewart Haley Jim Cook as a young man. Cook, a reputed gunman who was also known as an aggressive, overbearing range foreman, married Leta Easley, neice of the Winfrey brothers who owned the H-Bar Ranch. Cook lived the life of a rover traveling the country and Canada. Cook also wrote a book that described his life. However, many entries in the book defy credibility. One of the most fascinating characters associated with the early history of Roosevelt and Curry Counties was cowman, gunfighter, and racon...
