  • Remnants of ghost town show struggle to survive

    Don McAlavy

Frontiersman Kit Carson told an audience more than 100 years ago: “When you get to Onava ... you will be on the edge of tomorrowland, also called the land of manana by the Spanish speaking people there.” His audience, the members of a wagon train, was encamped for the night on the Old Santa Fe Trail at La Junta, the meeting place, the junction of the Mora and Sapello Rivers. It was also the junction of the wagon trail that lead through Cimmaron and the one that cut across past Wagon Mound to Fort Union. Colonel Carson was...

  • Flawed angels still messengers of God

On top of the entertainment center in our now-decorated living room, there sits an angel with a red dress, bare feet, and flyaway auburn hair which cascades over her shoulders. About 10 inches in size, and purchased at the after-Christmas sale two years ago, she quickly won my granddaughter’s heart and is, arguably, Mikayla’s favorite Christmas decoration. I say “arguably” because she is also extremely fond of the woodland Santa Claus. As I describe this angel to you, you must see that her facial expression, her demeano...

  • Cowboy, novelist fathered Roosevelt County’s first children

One of the most fascinating characters associated with the early history of Roosevelt and Curry Counties was cowman, gunfighter, and raconteur, James “Jim” Cook. Dr. Caleb Winfrey and his brother Hadley of Cass County, Missouri, had established the H-Bar Ranch near Portales in 1885. With them came their sister, Mary Josie Easley and her daughter, Leta. The giant XIT Ranch of Texas owned the land just across the New Mexico border. The XIT was divided into seven divisions with a foreman in each division who answered to a gen...

If you like to decorate for each season, but don’t want to change the entire decor or pack away boxes of holiday decorations in the attic, Rita Fuentes will show how a few sma...

  • Dec. 13 On the Shelves

The following books are available at the Portales-Public Library A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, illustrated by Brett Helquist: The watercolor/pen and ink drawings of the illustrator of The Series of Unfortunate Events and other children’s books bring this timeless classic to life just in time for the holidays. Helquist’s dramatic sense of scale captures the fanciful moments of the story. My personal favorite is a two-page spread showing the enormous ghost of Marley towering over a diminutive Scrooge, his back pre...
