  • Thinking back to a space-age Christmas tree

    Karl Terry|Updated Dec 7, 2019

It’s not Christmas until there’s snow or a Christmas tree or snow on a Christmas tree. We’ve already had the snow so my plan is to get the tree up this weekend. Growing up, the tree meant it was time to get serious about Christmas. We always had a cut Christmas tree bought in town. The only place I ever came in contact with a fake tree while I was young was at my grandmother’s house. She had one of those shiny aluminum trees with the color wheel. We were all reminis...

  • Credit unions focus on need, not profit

    Updated Dec 7, 2019

As part of a community financial institution that has been committed to Roosevelt and Curry counties for 63 years, I was shocked to read that a local banker is attacking credit unions in The Eastern New Mexico News. (Kent Carruthers’ guest column published Nov. 17) Credit unions and local community banks have both for years worked to grow our communities, and by parroting the big-bank talking points he’s doing this community a disservice. Our credit union has been serving the residents of Portales since 1957, helping peo...

  • Another viewpoint: Lottery director again after students' money

    Updated Dec 7, 2019

The gall, the nerve, the absolute impudence of New Mexico Lottery Authority Executive Director David Barden to ask the state Legislative Finance Committee to consider cutting Lottery Scholarships so that Barden can increase prizes. It really should come as no surprise. Barden’s modus operandi has always been, “cut scholarships, increase my pay and prizes,” in that order. Barden has become a perennial fixture in the Roundhouse, each spring asking to give New Mexico students’ tuition a haircut, by lowering the 30 percent...

  • Education reforms moving forward

    Michael Reagan|Updated Dec 7, 2019

Impeach! Impeach! Impeach! Removing Donald Trump from office before he can get re-elected is the only thing in Washington that Democrats and the national media really care about. But while Thelma Pelosi and Louise Nadler speed down their constitutionally crooked backroad to impeachment, the Trump administration has been quietly tackling issues like education that are actually important for Americans. Covered by the constant media glare of impeachment, for instance, Trump’s S...

  • America's social vitality is faltering

    Rich Lowry|Updated Dec 7, 2019

The economy is in robust good health, but our social fabric isn’t. By two basic measures of social vitality, births and deaths, American society is faltering. Both the fertility rate and life expectancy are declining, in a sign that people feel less secure and, in some cases, have no hope at all. We are attuned to headline-grabbing economic statistics — GDP growth, the unemployment rate, wages — as monthly and quarterly metrics of American well-being, but they aren’t as tell...

  • Not the Kevin Wilson you're looking for

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Dec 7, 2019

“Hi Kevin Wilson, my name is Kevin Wilson. I believe I’ve been getting your email.” About a year ago I made that phone call. About two years ago I told you a portion of the story that would eventually lead to that phone call. It started as a story of frustration and mistaken identity, and has turned into a teachable moment on how to handle a mistake you didn’t make. Sometime two Novembers ago, I got an email from a guy named Bob designing helmet decals. He wanted to float them by me, or at least he wanted to let some other K...
