NORMAN, Okla. - Lincoln Riley strongly emphasized quarterback Jalen Hurts' impact in Norman during his one and only season with Oklahoma. "What he's been able to do ... Every part of this is new to him, every single part," Riley said last month. "Every opponent is new. The offense is new. New plays, new program, new coaches, new teammates. Doing it with a basically new offensive line. I mean, it's all new." OU will have a Heisman Trophy finalist in New York City for the...

SANTA FE — Sophomore guard Taris Rippee led a balanced attack with 11 points and Portales High’s girls earned their first win of the season on Friday, beating Valencia 48-37 in the consolation semifinals of the Capital City Classic, hosted by Santa Fe High. After a bolting to a 17-point halftime lead, the Lady Rams (1-1) saw that cushion dwindle into single figures for a while in the second half before pulling away against the Lady Jaguars (0-4). With nine sophomores on his 13-player roster, PHS girls coach Wade Fraze sai...
PORTALES — They may have not have been expecting to pitch a shutout, but the Portales High Rams were certainly confident heading into last weekend’s Class 4A state championship football game at Bloomfield. Portales, seeded second, shut out the top-seeded and unbeaten Bobcats 23-0 for the school’s sixth state football crown, and second under coach Jaime Ramirez in the last four seasons. A celebration is scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at the Ram Athletic Center on the PHS campu...
CLOVIS — There’s no way to sugar-coat an opening-night loss. Especially after Clovis High’s boys basketball team dropped its season opener in heartbreaking fashion, 60-59, to Cleveland Friday night at Rock Staubus Gymnasium. But, it’s a long, long season. And Clovis head coach Jaden Isler saw positives in Friday’s defeat, and much to build upon as the Wildcats marched forward. “I thought our kids played extremely hard,” Isler said, “and they played well defensively. To...
PORTALES — With as much respect as can be due to an 0-8 NAIA team, it’s probably a fair statement that most of Eastern New Mexico’s reserves could crack the starting lineup for the Northern New Mexico Eagles. So it might have been fitting that the Greyhounds’ second unit provided the early spark the team needed Thursday, with a slow start the lone hiccup in a dominating 93-48 victory. Junior guard Laura Rowe hit a trio of 3-pointers in just 90 seconds to spark an early 16-0 ru...
TEXICO — Opening night is always a special time for any sports team. Fresh start, 0-0 record, all that. For the Texico boys basketball team, with a new head coach and so many new players, it was filled with even more anticipation Tuesday night at Texico High School, and even more excitement after the Wolverines pulled away from Tucumcari for a 74-50 victory. “Opening night, it’s amazing,” Wolverines junior post David Davalos said. “It’s a thrill to play here for Texico, it...
TEXICO — As opening nights go, Tuesday’s could have gone better for the Texico girls basketball team. And yet, head coach Richard Luscombe wasn’t overly disappointed. Considering it was just one game in and his team had to replace some key starters from last season and wasn’t even at full strength Tuesday, Luscombe thought losing only 37-35 to Tucumcari at Texico High School, especially after trailing by seven at halftime, wasn’t too bad a start. “With the team that we hav...
Realignment will change next year’s football schedules slightly for Portales, Clovis and Texico — and pretty drastically for Fort Sumner and Dora — assuming the New Mexico Activities Association’s proposals go through. The governing body of prep activities approved new classifications and alignments for member schools during its regular meeting Wednesday in Albuquerque. Teams have until Wednesday to appeal their placement to the NMAA. A complete realignment and a summary of changes are available at nmact.org. Distric...
CLOVIS - Call it a mixed bag for the Clovis girls basketball team after the Lady Wildcats' busy first week of home games. Tuesday's home opener at Rock Staubus Gymnasium ended with a 58-38 victory over Lubbock Estacado. Friday's game at the Rock ended with a tight but ultimately disappointing 44-40 loss to Amarillo's Randall, part of the Foxy's Drive-In Shootout. Those games, added to Clovis' 38-27 season-opening loss at Cleveland Nov. 26, had the Lady Wildcats at 1-2 three...
PORTALES — Portales High’s boys looked almost in midseason form in Tuesday’s season opener at Ram Athletic Center. Pretty amazing, especially considering they were just three days removed from winning the Class 4A state football championship. Senior guard Kellan Hightower, one of the key members of the football team, poured in four 3-pointers and 24 points and the Rams made short work of Dexter in a 79-34 rout of the Demons. Portales jumped out to a 10-0 lead, built that to 46-16 by halftime and never looked back. The entir...
CORSICANA, Texas — As he had much of the season, Paul Terry carried the brunt of the Greyhound offense, and the defense came up big when it had to for the first bowl win in Eastern New Mexico program history. Terry ran for 110 yards and all three touchdowns, and the Greyhounds got a pair of late stops to preserve a 20-13 victory over Southern Arkansas Saturday in the Heritage Bowl. The Greyhounds finished the season 8-4 and got their first bowl victory in three tries. The team had not made a postseason contest in the 2017 or...
NEW HOME, Texas — Junior Jonathan Mora scored 13 points, including a go-ahead 3-pointer with five seconds left, to lift Farwell’s boys past host New Home 40-39 in Thursday’s opener of the Leopards’ three-day tournament. New Home (2-2), which got 14 points from junior guard Ryan Weeks, erased a seven-point halftime deficit by outscoring Farwell 16-6 in the third quarter. Mora was the only player in double figures for the Steers. Later Thursday, Farwell improved to 3-3 for the season with a 65-53 win over Forsan (3-3). Mora and...

ELIDA — Grady’s girls came out firing on all cylinders Tuesday night. Especially junior forward Teryn Foote. Foote poured in 33 points and the Lady Bronchos dominated the middle two quarters in a 70-49 victory over Elida. Junior guard Isabel Martinez added 12 points for Grady (2-0), which extended a 14-13 lead at the quarter to 10 points at halftime. The Lady Bronchos also controlled the boards, Elida girls coach Eric Brown noted. “They ran a trapping press on us and forced some turnovers,” he said. “We’re small, and we’ve go...
