  • Portales looks over redistricting choices

    Steve Hansen, Staff writer|Updated Oct 30, 2021

PORTALES — The Portales City Council on Tuesday got a first glimpse of possibilities for redistricting as a result of 2020 U.S. Census results. The council took no action on the districting choices, which will require more work sessions and public input, Mayor Ron Jackson said. Brad Morrison, a project manager and redistricting specialist for Research and Polling, an Albuquerque-based market research and public opinion firm, presented two options for redistricting the city, based on the firm’s reading of census results. Morri...

The ENMWUA board on Thursday authorized the spending of $21,505 to have Clovis-based Preferred Painters clean and paint the fixtures on the lake side of the intake structure to improve appearanc...

  • Our people: Misty Rains: Living passionately

    Elizabeth Larsen, Correspondent|Updated Oct 30, 2021

Living passionately is what Misty Rains is known for as both a mother and administrative assistant to District Attorney Andrea Reeb. Rains is a "local girl" through and through. Born in Clovis, she was raised in Elida before moving to Portales after finishing high school. About 13 years ago, Rains took a job as a secretary in the Portales office of the district attorney and has worked her way up to her current role, which she considers an honor. As much as she loves her job,...

  • Past 18-plus months have been rough on junior high

    Karl Terry, Local columnist|Updated Oct 30, 2021

As I cruised slowly through the school zone at the junior high, my afternoon slowed even more as a young man appeared at the curb near the crosswalk. I stopped and the student stepped into the street, facemask still over his nose and his cell phone inches from his eyes. To say the pace he set was a leisurely stroll would have been inaccurate because it was much slower than a stroll. If I hadn’t been carefully watching his body language I might have thought he was messing w...

  • Opinion: NM will always have power imbalance

    Walt Rubel, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 30, 2021

State Treasurer Tim Eichenberg has apparently decided that if the weak and subservient New Mexico Legislature will not stand up for itself, he’ll do it for them. Eichenberg, who previously served in the state Senate, has written a court brief in support of a lawsuit filed by two senators, Republican Greg Baca and Democrat Jacob Candelaria, challenging the authority of Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham to spend federal relief money without going through the legislative process. This is the second time in the last few weeks that I’ve...

  • Opinion: No moving on from events of Jan. 6

    Leonard Pitts, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 30, 2021

Condoleezza Rice wants to move on. She concedes that what happened on Jan. 6 was “wrong.” It was, she told the hosts of “The View,” an “assault on law and order, and an assault on our democratic processes.” And Rice, a former national security adviser and secretary of state, thinks those who attacked and ransacked the U.S. Capitol should be punished. That day, she said, made her cry for the first time since Sept. 11. So yes, it was a terrible day. It was a stunning da...

  • Opinion: Rice teaching lesson liberals need to learn

    Christine Flowers, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 30, 2021

I was watching “The View” the other day, and while I’d normally come away from that experience scarred by the smirking face and screeching cackle of Joy Behar, this time was different. This time there was a woman with a brain at the table. This time, it was more than just a group of caffeinated dames pretending to have gravitas when they’re nothing more than Real(ly) Annoying Housewives. Condoleezza Rice was the guest. This is the first woman of color to fill the role of secr...

  • Opinion: Reason, debate open for everyone

    Rich Lowry, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 30, 2021

George Orwell famously said “there are some ideas so absurd that only an intellectual could believe them.” His adage now applies to anyone associated with academia in any capacity. The New York Times ran a report the other day on the canceling of University of Chicago geophysicist Dorian Abbot for his dissenting views on affirmative action. The paper quoted a Williams College geosciences professor, Phoebe A. Cohen, who supports Abbot’s shunning. She explained her dim view of a...

  • Opinion: Governor should give lawmakers money from feds

    Albuquerque Journal, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 30, 2021

The term “constitutional crisis” isn’t one that should be tossed around carelessly. And it might overstate the importance of the simmering dispute between Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and lawmakers of both political parties over who has authority to decide how to spend roughly $1.1 billion in unspent federal stimulus funding doled out by Washington, D.C., during the pandemic. But if it is an overstatement, it’s not by much - and the term “constitutional emergency of generational importance” used by two state senators ch...

  • Opinion: Migrant situation will happen again

    Rube Render, Local columnist|Updated Oct 30, 2021

A recent “USA Today” article by Rebecca Morin contains a wealth of information on intelligence gathering and analysis as it pertains to the U.S. border. Morin points out that, “The administration was caught flatfooted by roughly 15,000 Haitian migrants who camped out last month under a bridge in Del Rio, Texas.” Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas told the paper Del Rio was “most certainly a challenge that we had not encountered previously.” Mayorkas also said, “We...

In a 28-minute meeting, trustees voted to select Bradburn from a field of four applicants. • Storyteller: Remember to feed spirit, too

    Betty Williamson|Updated Oct 30, 2021

Jean Grissom, 94, has been keeping a diary since she was a 'tween. I started sharing some of her stories in Wednesday's paper. I couldn't stop with one column. She's too fascinating to capture in just 1,000 words. So here's part two. A boy from Artesia Jean gave higher education a try in 1944, enrolling in what was then Eastern New Mexico College that fall. But she was small in stature and had a miles-long walk to and from campus. With no lockers available, she had to carry...

  • Clovis schools react to calls

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated Oct 30, 2021

CLOVIS — Whether it comes by a school alert or a child’s text, a school lockdown is a message a parent never wants to receive. Since Oct. 19, Clovis Municipal Schools has had to initiate five of them throughout their various campuses. Four of the lockdowns were lifted in 30 minutes or less, the fifth was lifted after nearly two hours and the district reported no injuries from any of the incidents. Clovis Police Capt. Roman Romero said of the five incidents between Oct. 19 and Wednesday, one did not include a citable or arr...
