  • Judge rules for Dems in redistricting suit

The Santa Fe New Mexican, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 10, 2023

A state district judge has ruled that while Democratic lawmakers may have worked to dilute Republican voting power in one of the state's three congressional districts, their efforts did not rise to the level of "of an egregious gerrymander." The ruling by Ninth Judicial District Judge Fred T. Van Soelen of Clovis struck a blow to the plaintiffs in the case, including the Republican Party of New Mexico, who sued in January 2022. The GOP argued the Democratic-majority Legislature purposefully redrew the map for the 2nd...

  • Commentary: Has Tech found formula for success?

Jon Mark Beilue, Sports columnist|Updated Oct 10, 2023

The question is not, what if this offensive game plan had been in place at the start of the season? Those are losses under the bridge. The question is, can this balanced Texas Tech offense and solid defense lead to a turnaround season? The plan that was on display the week before – a 21-point win over Houston – was front and center again on Saturday in a 39-14 win at Baylor. Pound the football with Tahj Brooks, and use the threat of a new-found run game to pass less fre...

  • Faith: Love and trust Jesus and he will be more than enough

    Curtis Shelburne, Local columnist|Updated Oct 10, 2023

We’d not often put it this way, but I’m afraid that most of us live way too much of our lives afraid. When you boil down what bothers us—reduce it to its essence—at the bottom is almost aways fear. Analyze it even further, and at the root of most of our fear is this: we’re afraid we won’t have enough. And then what will become of us? In John 6, Jesus and his disciples have just sailed across the Sea of Galilee and landed, probably, near Bethsaida. What they’re looking for i...

  • Hobbs posts shutout over Lady Cats

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 10, 2023

The score may have been close for a long time, but it was clear the Hobbs Lady Eagles were in the catbird seat most of the way in Saturday’s District 4-5A girls soccer match against Clovis High at Leon Williams. Junior forward/midfielder Brianna Baker converted a tough-angle shot late in the first half, and senior forward Hannah Davila tacked on two late tallies for a 3-0 victory over CHS. After a week off to help heal some bruises, Portales High’s football team is ready to take on the District 4-4A portion of its schedule. “It definitely allowed us to get healed up,” Rams coach Jaime Ramirez said of the break. If rankings mean anything – and sometimes they’re tenuous at best at the prep level – it should be a challenging stretch. All four district teams had last weekend off, and all are ranked in the top seven in Class 4A by MaxPreps. The Rams (7-0), now third behind Bloomfield (7-0) and district rival Lovin...

  • There is a season … turn, turn, turn

Grant McGee, The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 10, 2023

Autumn rolled in a little over two weeks ago. I think of change when autumn comes to pass. Then I remember a song of change, "Turn, Turn, Turn," a song written by Pete Seeger and given the folk-rock treatment by the folk-rock band, The Byrds. If you don't know the lyrics to "Turn, Turn, Turn" it's pretty simple ... they’re in “The Good Book,” in the book of Ecclesiastes .. .chapter 3, verses 1 through 8: "There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: “A time to be born and a time to die, ...

  • Opinion: What's the plan with Speaker gone?

    Michael Reagan, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 10, 2023

OK, my fellow Republicans, you got rid of Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Eight of you joined with every Democrat in the House of Representatives – the only part of the federal government we control – to vote McCarthy out, 216-210. In the process you threw the House into chaos, killed any hope of passing important bills anytime soon and made yourselves the laughing stock of the political world. OK, so you made history. Now what’s your plan? And where is it? What? You have no plan?...

  • Opinion: Higher education needs a revolution

    Bloomberg News, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 10, 2023

When the revolution in higher education finally arrives, how will we know? I have a simple metric: When universities change how they measure faculty work time. Using this yardstick, the U.S. system remains far from a fundamental transformation. It is no accident that former college president Brian Rosenberg titled his new book, "‘Whatever It Is, I’m Against It’: Resistance to Change in Higher Education." Some background: Faculty at Tier 1 research universities (which includes my own employer, George Mason University) typic...

    Elwood Watson, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 10, 2023

Oct. 3 will go down in American history as the first time a speaker of the House was expelled from Congress by his own peers. Kevin McCarthy, a man consumed of blind personal ambition and self-interest, was shown the exit door by his congressional colleagues. Eight Republicans – Andy Biggs, Ken Buck, Tim Burchett, Eli Crane, Matt Gaetz, Bob Good, Nancy Mace and Matt Rosendale – joined all Democrats (who were unanimous) in voting out McCarthy. The American public witnessed Rep...

Editor's note: This is one in a continuing series of interviews with candidates in the Nov. 7 elections.
