  • Judge rules for Dems in redistricting suit

Robert Nott The Santa Fe New Mexican, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 7, 2023

A state district judge has ruled that while Democratic lawmakers may have worked to dilute Republican voting power in one of the state's three congressional districts, their efforts did not rise to the level of "of an egregious gerrymander." The ruling by Ninth Judicial District Judge Fred T. Van Soelen of Clovis struck a blow to the plaintiffs in the case, including the Republican Party of New Mexico, who sued in January 2022. The GOP argued the Democratic-majority Legislature purposefully redrew the map for the 2nd...

  • Still treasure gift of love from Charlie

    Patti Dobson|Updated Oct 4, 2023

I had a Charlie (Broz) moment this past week; a few of them actually. I am a mad scientist baker. I see new photos and I take them as personal challenges. Most times, that works out just fine. Not the same with cooking. A few days ago, I decided to try a new Mediterranean chicken dish. It was sort of a jacked-up cacciatore thing with some fancy spices. The photo was beautiful. I thought this was something I could make without setting the oven on fire. I mostly followed the...

  • Sharing a few thoughts about martyrs, martyrdom

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Oct 4, 2023

According to Merriam-Webster.com, “martyr” most commonly refers to “a person who voluntarily suffers death as the penalty of witnessing to and refusing to renounce a religion.” I recently read an article that asserts as many as 160,000 Christians each year give up their lives because of their allegiance to Christ. Dan Wooding, journalist and co-host of the “Window on the World” radio show went on to write that “according to current rates, one in every 200 Christians ca...

  • Say it again: Give Brooks the ball

    Jon Mark Beilue|Updated Oct 4, 2023

If Texas Tech’s slow football start is to be salvaged, it just might come from the unlikeliest of players. Nothing against Tahj Brooks, but he’s a running back. Those who carry the football at Tech have been supporting actors at best for the last few seasons. And by “last few seasons,” I mean the entire 21st century. Tech is the home of Mike Leach and the explosion of the Air Raid, of Patrick Mahomes, of Kliff Kingsbury as a coach and first as a quarterback with his 17 NCAA...

They were slated to open district play on Tuesday night at Carlsbad. Junior forward Ihab Mesbah had a goal and an assist against the Class 4A Tigers (8-3-1), who found shots...

THE STAFF OF THE NEWS|Updated Oct 4, 2023

Texico and Melrose had a chance to test themselves against some larger schools in Portales High’s Peyton Chavez Invitational volleyball tournament over the weekend at the Ram Athletic Center, and both gave good accounts of themselves. The Lady Wolverines (9-2), ranked second in Class 2A by MaxPreps, made it to the championship match and bounced back from a first-game rout to push the host Lady Rams before losing 25-9, 26-24, 34-32. Meantime, Class 1A No. 1 Melrose (9-1) n...

  • Cats hoping for another charge toward playoffs

THE STAFF OF THE NEWS|Updated Oct 4, 2023

The first step to a possible postseason berth certainly went well for Clovis High’s football team on Friday night – a 42-12 domination of Albuquerque High at Leon Williams Stadium. Now the Wildcats (2-5) are preparing for the first of back-to-back trips to Santa Fe – separated by a bye week – when they face Santa Fe High in a 7 p.m. kickoff on Friday. It will be the district opener for the Demons (1-5), who are coming off a 62-20 thrashing on Saturday at Lovington. Clovis won last year’s matchup at home 53-0, ending it...

  • No. 20 Angelo State turns back Hounds

    Dave Wagner|Updated Oct 4, 2023

With two narrow home wins already under its collective belt, Eastern New Mexico University’s bid for a third came up short on Saturday night. Angelo State, ranked 20th in NCAA Division II, limited the Greyhounds to 106 total yards and no points in the second half, and the Rams claimed a 23-14 Lone Star Conference victory at Greyhound Stadium. It was anything but easy, but the Rams (3-2, 2-1 LSC) tightened up their defense after the intermission and made it a two-score game w...

  • Final prep tips needed for first-time mom

    Landry Sena|Updated Oct 4, 2023

Today’s daily fact: my baby’s thumb is the size of a jelly bean. How are we already at 33 weeks? That’s only like … seven more weeks to go. It’s hard to believe this 4-pound baby will be earth side and in my arms so soon. Apparently week 33 of pregnancy is a good time to start packing my hospital bag. Because this is my first time doing this whole thing, I’m not sure what’s really needed and what’s not. Just like everything else, there are a lot of gadgets and gizmos out there that can be overwhelming for a first-time mom. So...

  • Academic freedom crucial to democracy

    Elwood Watson|Updated Oct 4, 2023

Those of us who work in academia understand that academic freedom represents the cornerstone of successful colleges and universities. It epitomizes the right of freedom to teach, discuss, engage in research and freely publish your findings. It also means the ability to dictate one’s own teaching and scholarship agenda, the security of academic positions and shared governance to ensure independence. Despite such facts, the mission of academic freedom is under severe attack f...

  • Republican debate a total disaster

    Michael Reagan|Updated Oct 4, 2023

From the first dumb question to the abrupt ending that caught everyone by surprise, the GOP presidential primary debate produced by the Fox Business channel was a total disaster. I know. I was there Wednesday night – in Row 5 of the Air Force One pavilion in the Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley, Calif. At the beginning of the debate it was a special treat to see and hear the praise that the Fox people bestowed on my father, his historic accomplishments and his strong and p...

  • Are you ready for some championship football teams?

    David Stevens Publisher|Updated Oct 4, 2023

Area high school football fans haven’t had a lot to cheer about the past two years … at least not by our standards. In the past two seasons, not one team from Curry or Roosevelt counties won a state title. That just might change this year. Heading into the season’s eighth week, at least four squads are playing well enough to keep their fans hopeful. Portales is generating the most optimism. The Rams are 7-0 heading into their bye week. And they’ve not been challenged yet. Here...

Walmart store future unclear One month after an accused arsonist destroyed Clovis’ Walmart, company officials were offering little information about the store’s future. “We don’t have that information yet,” company spokesman Joe Pennington said in a telephone interview on Monday. Pennington did say all the employees at the Clovis Walmart had either gone to work at the Walmart in Portales or “have chosen to work … at some nearby stores.” “Broadly speaking everybody is still employed,” he said. Court records show Walmar...
