  • Faith: Pick your own figures that make you think, thank, laugh

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated Jul 12, 2022

Usually when a public figure of some sort declares that the latest election or Supreme Court decision was “the last straw,” and they’re seriously considering depriving the United States of their presence and moving to, say, Qatar or Monaco or an island in French Polynesia (Rwanda or Iran rarely make the list), I’m tempted to send them a note and offer to help pay for airfare. I figure we could muddle by without them. But the much more permanent departure of a few of my favo...

  • Looking back at the 'heritage' of Heritage Days

    Betty Williamson, Local columnist|Updated Jul 12, 2022

Roosevelt County’s Heritage Days celebration scheduled for this weekend got me to wondering about its origins, the “heritage” of Heritage Days, as it were. It took some looking — as well as a few texts with Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce Director Karl Terry and emails with Regina Bouley-Sweeten at Eastern New Mexico University’s Golden Library — to find the dates of the first one, but we did: May 24-26, 1985. I learned that Sandi Usrey — now Sandi Bergman—was m...

  • Opinion: Basing political movement on lies unsustainable

Minneapolis Star Tribune, Syndicated content|Updated Jul 12, 2022

In the end, it wasn’t one scandal that brought down Boris Johnson. It was a series. While each transgression was unique, they shared this truth: The British prime minister is a liar. The weight of the untruths finally became too much even for Conservative parliamentarians. In recent days about 50, from closely allied Cabinet secretaries to ministers and lower-level officials, resigned with refrains that the serial mistruths on matters political and personal made Johnson’s continued tenure untenable. Johnson, true to for...

  • Opinion: Politics depends on blind spots

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Updated Jul 12, 2022

Everyone has blind spots. Especially when it comes to politics. In fact, I’d say politics is made up of blind spots knitted together with wishful thinking, expressed through legislation designed to violate people you don’t like. Conservatives generally love the Constitution. They have a blind spot when it comes to unconstitutionally controlling people’s movement. They obsess over “immigration” and are willing to toss the Constitution aside for this issue. It’s almost a un...

  • Opinion: NM could use a little less attention

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Updated Jul 12, 2022

New Mexico’s been making the national news a lot lately, and not the good kind. First came the wildfires. The Hermits Peak Fire was making national headlines even before it merged with the Calf Canyon Fire and became the biggest fire in state history. Before that there was the McBride Fire that ripped through a residential woodland at Ruidoso, killing two people, and since then we’ve seen the Black Fire in the Gilas grow into the state’s second largest fire ever. As of this writing, the nation has turned its attention towar...

  • 'Yard sale' signs fall victim to new sign code

the Staff of The News|Updated Jul 12, 2022

Enforcement of Clovis’ new sign code has “created quite a ruckus” according to Clovis’ Building Safety Director Daron Roach. Roach said the city’s new sign code went into effect in January and has regulations for all kinds of signage: Temporary signs, abandoned signs and more as well as new regulations for new signage. One area of enforcement that caught the attention of area residents is the apparent crackdown on “yard sale” signs. People who erect such signs may discover they’ve been quickly removed by city personnel. “We...

The City of Clovis is renovating the Lyceum Theater on Main Street in downtown Clovis.
