Clovis Police SWAT team called out Saturday morning

The Clovis Police Department SWAT Team was called out Saturday morning to help the Curry County Sheriff's department in arresting a sex offender on an outstanding warrant.

According to a news release from Clovis Police department captain Roman Romero the SWAT team was requested to support sheriff's office personnel at about 3:45 a.m. at a motel at 1616 Mabry Dr. for a possible hostage/barricaded subject.

According to undersheriff Michael Brockett, information had been received that Theodore Christan, 53, was at the motel.

The report said Christan was wanted on an outstanding felony warrant for failing to register as a sex offender.

Deputies had been attempting to communicate with Christan since Friday night, according to the report.

A search warrant was obtained for Christan's room at 12:25 a.m. Saturday.

Romero wrote that based on the information developed at the scene, Clovis Police Department SWAT was activated due to the search warrant, Christan's outstanding arrest warrant, and the assessed danger posed to the officers.

Christan did talk to law enforcement intermittently throughout the event, according to Romero.

A door and window of the motel was breached and at 6:16 a.m., a 46-year-old woman stepped out from the room and at 6:17 a.m. Christan came from the room, according to Romero.

Romero wrote both subjects were secured and Christan was taken into custody for his outstanding warrant.

Booker reported the woman was released from the scene.
