  • Faith: 'There is a time for everything,' even reading

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated May 10, 2022

For a long time, I’ve found the study of time — specifically, how we perceive its passing, and how it’s connected to our biological and circadian rhythms — fascinating. Research rolls on, but it’s quite clear that, whether you’re a morning person, night person, or anywhere in between — a lark, an owl, a “third bird,” of whatever — your preference is not just your preference. It’s far more hard-wired biologically than we’d ever dreamed before this subject was seriously s...

The Lady Rams challenged favored Artesia for the top spot, but fell four points short with 101 to 105 for the Lady Bulldogs. “The girls did awesome,” PHS track coach Quintin Wilson said. “It came down to the mile relay (the final event of the meet). They (Lady Bulldogs) beat us out, but it wasn’t for lack of effort.” On the boys’ side, Portales finished fourth in the four-team field with 51 points. Artesia won it comfortably wi...

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated May 10, 2022

CLOVIS - Jeremiah Johnson surprised himself a bit in Friday's District 4-5A track meet at Leon Williams Stadium. So did Sammy Fuentes. Both notched somewhat unexpected wins for the Clovis High boys track team, and in the process earned berths in those events to this week's Class 5A state competition at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. • CCS has steep hill to climb after first round

the Staff of The News|Updated May 10, 2022

ALBUQUERQUE — The good news for Clovis Christian’s boys after Monday’s first round of Class 1-3A state golf at Canyon Club at Four Hills was they were a lot closer to first place than they were to third. The bad news is they were facing a 17-stroke deficit to Mesilla Valley heading into Tuesday’s final round. Defending 1-3A state champion CCS shot a first-day team score of 358, leaving the Eagles comfortably ahead of Socorro and St. Michael’s, who were tied for third at 397. But they had a bit of a mountain to climb aga...

  • Opinion: Graduates: Be bold, but be safe

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Updated May 10, 2022

It’s that time of year, when just about every newspaper in the state gives front-page attention to at least one local graduation. They’re always a big deal, especially to those who walk across that ceremonial stage and make their families proud. Graduations mark a transition in our lives, but sometimes I think it’s over-emphasized. Anyone who thinks a diploma or degree is a ticket to success is sadly mistaken. It’s just a ticket to ride; you still have to get there on your own. But rather than continuing with a recitation of...

  • Good community can help you find your way home

    Betty Williamson, Local columnist|Updated May 10, 2022

I recently had the opportunity to meet two young distant relatives of mine: an almost-3-month-old and a just-turned-2 cutie pie. These tykes are brothers. If I am counting generations correctly, their great-great-great-grandfather and my great-grandfather would be the same person, a fact that carries little weight with the diaper-wearing crowd. The baby doesn’t play a big social role at this point. His main job is being passed from doting adult to doting adult and o...

  • Opinion: Neither side correct on court leak

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Updated May 10, 2022

The recent Supreme Court leak is all over the media. People on both sides feel compelled to speak out loudly and passionately for whichever side they support. There is no debate; just a fight. For days it was as though hyperbole had become America’s official language. I even allowed myself to be drawn in. Getting involved didn’t improve my life in any way. Engaging with this subject makes me miserable, like sticking a nine-volt battery to my tongue (please don’t do that!...

PORTALES - The Portales School Board on Monday discussed redistricting after hearing two options from Brad Morrison of Research and Polling, the redistricting consultant the district hired to adjust the districts. The redistricting was made necessary by shifts in the population of Portales Municipal Schools' service area, which showed that some minor changes were needed to bring the school district into compliance, Morrison said. Of Portales Schools' five voting districts, pop...
