  • Duke lacrosse case concludes without winner

    Freedom Newspapers

From the beginning, the Duke lacrosse case felt more like a game than the pursuit of justice. Appearances suggest the prosecutor was playing for political gain. The voices of race-based outrage — whether they supported the African-American accuser or the white suspects — played for their respective causes. In the spirit of competition, then, let’s take a look at the scoreboard to see who won and who lost. We know the lacrosse players didn’t win. For them, the decision to drop the charges seems like a semi-vindication at best...

  • Parsonage door always open to those in need

    Judy Brandon

In thinking about celebrating Clovis as 100 years old, I can recall some good times as a preacher’s kid in the late 1950s. Daddy was pastor of Central Baptist Church here in Clovis and in the ’50s we had experiences that are a little different from what I have today. I must say I am most thankful for my upbringing and thankful for my role as “preacher’s kid.” The experiences Susie, my sister, and I had as preacher’s children were varied. One of those experiences was living...

  • Understanding key to racial harmony

    Helena Rodriguez

By the time you read this, Don Imus’ racial slur aimed at the Rutgers women’s basketball team will have been talked to death. But will there be a resolution to forgive and forget? I doubt it. Since Imus recently referred to the mostly black team as “Nappy-headed hos” after they lost the NCAA women’s title to the University of Tennessee, his words have opened a new wave of dialogue on racism in the United States. This dialogue resurfaces every time another shock jock or politician utters the wrong words. You know the scenario....

  • Don’t stop when walking through the fire

    Joan Clayton

Life has a way of dealing some pretty hard blows. In the midst of a crisis, it is hard to make decisions, even to be rational. Many times, troubles pile upon troubles, blinding our thinking process. Yet “there is nothing new under the sun” (Ecclesiastes 1:9). Somewhere, sometime, someone has gone through the same situation. We can either face the adversity with faith and courage or buckle under it. The other alternative is to become bitter with self-pity and spend the rest of life in miserable existence. So how do con...

  • Alternative minimum tax should be repealed

Editorial According to the New York Times, “House Democratic leaders, in an effort to upstage Republicans on the issue of tax cuts, are preparing legislation that would permanently shield all but the very richest taxpayers from the alternative minimum tax, which is likely to affect tens of millions of families as early as next year if it is left unchanged.” Unfortunately, the simplest solution — repealing the AMT — doesn’t seem to be on the table, nor is the almost-as-simple solution of indexing the AMT to inflation...
