Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Women’s day offers learning experience

Variety, education and entertainment will be offered to women in the community during the third annual Women’s Day Out program on Saturday.

The event, sponsored by the Portales Woman’s Club, will be held at Eastern New Mexico University’s Greyhound Arena in Portales.

“It’s just a way for women to learn things and have a day out,” said Sheryl Borden, Woman’s Club member.

Started three years ago, the program not only provides an outlet in which women can gather, but is also a fund-raiser for the Woman’s Club. Money raised from the program will be used for historical and heritage projects and community service projects, Borden said.

Attendees at this year’s event be able to visit more than 20 area vendors. The day-long event will also include five one-hour workshops. Some of the featured workshops include gardening, flower arranging, face reading, self-defense and investing, Borden said.

“We try to do something different each year,” Borden said of the workshops.

Returning for his third year of workshop teaching is Curt Jaynes, owner of GardenSource Nursery and Landscaping in Portales. This year, Jaynes will teach two workshops, one on container gardening and the other on lawn, tree and shrub care and growth, he said.

A gardener for most of his life, Jaynes said his classes will be hands-on, allowing the opportunity for the participants to get a feel for doing things related to the gardening process.

“It’s just a way to give back to the community and help others be successful at gardening,” Jaynes said.

Creating a window swag and a centerpiece from silk and dried flowers will be the focus of a class taught by Anne McMath, owner of Anne’s Creations in Portales. This will be McMath’s first time to teach a class, though she has been creating and selling her products off and on for the past 20 years, she said.

“It’s really going to be my first experience doing this. This one is going to be fun,” McMath said.
