Lady Rams sweep Dexter

DEXTER — Portales Lady Ram head softball coach Robbie Crowley knows her girls have to clean up their errors, but the Portales offense battered Dexter enough Thursday afternoon to come away with a District 4-3A doubleheader sweep.

Senior pitcher Sasha Parker allowed two earned runs on five hits and struck out 12 in the first game to lead the Lady Rams to a 9-3 victory. Shareesa Nusser threw a two-hitter in the second game for a 17-7 win.

“(Sasha’s) getting better every game — getting stronger every game, and that’s what we need. We have to have both Sasha and Shareesa throwing sharp,” Lady Ram head coach Robbie Crowley said.

The Lady Rams (8-6, 4-0) took control early, posting a five-run first inning capped by a Danielle Vasquez two-RBI double. Portales put one more run on the board in the second inning, then later added three insurance runs to win the opener 9-3.

The Lady Rams also hit the ball in the second game — in fact, everybody in the lineup got at least one hit.

“We did hit the ball,” Crowley said. “That’s one of the things that we’ve really wanted to work on. The hitting was definitely a positive thing for us tonight.”

Senior Amanda Terry went 3-for-4, while junior Vicki Huber went 3-for-5 from the plate. Freshman Michelle Garcia went 2-for-3 including a double and a triple.

Despite the big win, the Portales defense committed five errors.

“We let the little things get to us,” Crowley said. “We get an error and we let that get to us and it’s a domino effect on the whole team and we can’t do that.”
