Thursday prep roundup: Rohrbach lifts Texico to opener win

CLAYTON — Only three players scored for Texico’s girls Thursday night. Turns out, that was just enough.

The Lady Wolverines used a 17-point second quarter to take the lead and held on for a 48-43 win over Clayton in the District 7-2A opener for both teams.

Junior Riley Rohrbach scored a personal-best 21 points for Texico (8-9 overall), while senior Ashley Hill and junior Rachel Phipps added 16 and 11, respectively. Rohrbach accounted for all of Texico’s free throw attempts in the game, going 11-for-12.

For the Lady Jackets (11-10), sophomore Akira Herrera had 13 points and junior Mandy Crisp collected 12.

In other girls games on Thursday:

Fort Sumner 54, Clovis Christian 18 — The Vixens opened a 16-3 lead at the quarter en route to a District 6-1A victory over the Lady Eagles.

Junior Keeli West scored 15 points and freshman Olivia Lucero added 11 for Fort Sumner (16-5, 3-1). Junior Makayla Robinson topped CCS (12-8, 1-3) with 10 points.

In area boys games on Thursday:

Texico 79, Clayton 35 — Already leading by 18 points, the Wolverines outscored Clayton 18-0 in the third quarter in the district opener for both teams.

Senior Luke Phipps and junior Gabriel Bailey had 15 points each and senior Ruger Horton added 14 for Texico (13-4 overall) as eight players contributed to the scoring column. The Yellowjackets (6-12) were led by 13 points from freshman Rylan Ruf.

Logan 63, Grady 60 — The teams went down to the wire as a last-second Bronchos 3-point try was off the mark. Logan (12-8, 2-1 district) outscored Grady 14-9 in the final period to pull off the win.

Junior Danta Sanchez scored 29 points and freshman Michael Sena had 13 for the Longhorns. Senior Chism Rush and sophomore Dustin Bryant scored 14 points each for the Bronchos (9-8, 2-2), and sophomore Tobe Slater added 11.

In the girls matchup, the district-leading Lady Longhorns (17-3, 3-0) posted a 57-12 victory over the Lady Bronchos (6-11, 0-4).

Fort Sumner 49, Clovis Christian 39 — The Foxes built a 13-point halftime lead in posting a District 6-1A win over the Eagles.

Juniors Jayden Cline (14 points) and Chance Drake (12) paced Fort Sumner (11-10, 2-2). Freshman Carter Teune scored 15 points for CCS (8-12, 0-4), and junior Dawson Teune had eight.

In games from Wednesday night:

Elida girls 61, Lake Arthur 10 — The Lady Tigers broke through for a District 4-1A victory at Lake Arthur, getting season highs of 23 points from junior Tiffany Ortega and 16 from freshman Raquel Rogers.

Elida (2-17, 1-3) led 18-2 at the quarter and did not allow more than four points in any period. The Lady Panthers were led by eighth-grader Brianna Lard with eight points.

Elida boys 82, Lake Arthur 41 — Four players scored in double figures as the Tigers (17-3, 3-1) broke away after leading 18-13 at the end of one.

Sophomore Rylan Creighton and junior Teagan Burton scored 21 points each for Elida, while senior Tyce Delk had 13 and senior Wes Poling scored 10. Junior Adrian Guillen led all scorers with 27 points for the Panthers.
