  • Crying not sign of weakness

Clyde Davis Popular enough, on Facebook and other social networking sites, are those questionnaires that reveal categorical details about who you are, by insight into certain categories-favorite food, best movie you ever saw, and so on. I am going to propose one I have never seen, which doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist, and as is only fair, I will be the one to start the ball rolling. Things that make you cry. I will start the ball because my sense of masculinity is such that revealing that tears occasionally overtake me...

  • Hotel offers historic experience

Karl Terry Do you believe in ghosts? For me I guess the answer would be no but I do enjoy the stories and legends. If a ghost story helps put a person in a period of history and brings that history to life in some way that’s pretty cool whether you believe in ghosts or not. Years ago we had stopped at the St. James Hotel in Cimarron for lunch and we learned a little about the history and reported paranormal activity at the establishment. I told my wife we would have to book a room there some day. This month we scratched t...

  • My Turn: Updating Lennon's lyrics

If John Lennon could update “Imagine,” here are a few of my unlyrical suggestions: “Imagine respecting my beliefs, or non-beliefs, as much as you want me to respect yours.” “Imagine taking a leap of faith, with no critical thinking, to believe everything I told you about ancient, contradictory anecdotes—sans support from modern knowledge.” “Imagine not judging others by their genetics.” “Imagine not caring who people married.” “Imagine not giving others too much, or too little, credit because of their physical appear...

  • Children take spotlight at fair

Jared Tucker Chasing pigs, wrestling goats, racing turtles, roping a dummy steer and saddling up on a wooden horse were among Saturday’s events during the Roosevelt County Fair Kid’s Day. Seven-year-old Hayden Powell’s team took the best time in goat branding in the first round. Powell said he didn’t need any practice to earn the 8:88 time it took his team to wrestle down and “brand” the goat. “I like it because you get to pick your own teams, you have a time to beat, and you get to flank them (the goats)” Powell said.
