STAFF WRITER [email protected] A state agency has fallen under scrutiny for the way it handles its food stamp program, according to state officials. The New Mexico Health Services Department Income Support Division has been improperly processing and altering applications for its emergency Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), officials charge. According to New Mexico Center on Law and Poverty Staff Attorney Louise Pocock, six court orders have been given to the Health Services Department in the last two...

  • Brown: High plains are plain plains

There’s a terrain that runs through this part of the world and guess what? It’s flat. There just ain’t much other way to describe it. It’s a pretty plain plain. I’m personally quite fond of open country. Born a flatlander, I get a little claustrophobic when I can’t see the curve of the earth by standing on top of the tractor. Audra Brown Down on the Farm The word terrain has some interesting connotations, from the simple relationship to its Greek ancestor to the idea that i... Full story

  • Rodriguez: Focus on prevention, not contention

    Helena Rodriguez

Growing up in north Portales, as kids we called police “pigs.” If we were at Grandma Chaya’s house in Lubbock, they were “chotas,” slang for police. I’m not proud of this, but it was what I ignorantly picked up in the 1970s growing up after the civil rights movement. My mom worked for Community Action and sometimes went to court to translate for people in cases of “police brutality” against Hispanics. Who provoked the attacks? I don’t know. But these were times of lingerin...

  • Shelburne: A decidedly delusional discourse

    Curtis Shelburne

I wonder why “D” words are so often downers? Death, disease, depression, despair, desperation, divorce, doom, despondency, doldrums, detritus. Decompose, destruct, deconstruct, demoralize, demonize. Decrepit, dim-witted, dumb, disheartened, disemboweled (sorry), dead, discombobulated, dilapidated, dingy, delusional, desperate. That last one’s a cheat. We’ve already listed its brother Darrell and its other brother Darrell: “despair” and “desperation.” Darn! On, though, we go. D...

  • DA should tell more credible version of stop

During her primary campaign, District Attorney Francesca Martinez-Estevez said her priorities if she were re-elected would be to continue “the aggressive prosecution of the most violent and dangerous offenders, community safety, victim rights and enhancing community partnerships with law enforcement.” A June 11 traffic stop makes it clear that Martinez-Estevez has cemented her “partnership” with law enforcement. Making “community safety” a priority, well that’s a whole other matter. Consider that: • A driver called 911 to r... Full story

  • McManigal: Today's counterfeit laws not ethical

“You are the government” is one of the most useful lies ever crafted by the bullies who mean to enslave you. If you are to blame, you can’t blame anyone else. If a law makes gun ownership or drug use or driving without a seat belt illegal, you can’t really blame the people who wrote the law, nor their hired guns who violently enforce it. It’s your own fault. Kent McManigal But, truth gets in the way. If I were government, I could fire all legislators, police, and bureaucra...

  • Render: Public tired of finesse in politics

Most followers of the political scene these days are familiar with the careful parsing of words Hillary Clinton (Yale Law 1973) used when answering questions about her personal email server. Rube Render For instance, “I never sent or received any classified information,” became “I never sent or received any information marked classified.” To truly appreciate the brilliance of this technique, one needs to revisit the question and answer session between President Bill Clinton...

  • CHS rehires Thomas for softball post

    Dave Wagner

Sports writer [email protected] After 10 seasons as Clovis High’s softball coach, Brandi Thomas stepped away from the position in 2014. Eventually, she realized just how much she missed it. CHS athletic director Dale Fullerton announced Wednesday night that Thomas has been rehired to the position, replacing Freddy Perez, who stepped down in May. “Taking a break for two years, it just brought it all back around,” Thomas said Thursday. “It was one of those things I was missing. I applied for it and left it in the hands of c...

  • Faith: Pastor saying good-bye to Texico's First Baptist

Courtesy photo Rob Hollis, longtime pastor at First Baptist Church of Texico, is about to become Muleshoe High School’s assistant principal. Staff Writer [email protected] Leading a church is no different than leading a high school — just ask Rob Hollis. Hollis realized this quickly when he became pastor of First Baptist Church of Texico in June 2000 after serving for three years as the principal of Texico High School. “The two are very similar,” Hollis said. “It’s d... Full story
