Staff report

A Lubbock man was arrested for trafficking methamphetamine and trying to escape a Clovis police officer on foot and take his gun, according to a criminal complaint.

Ramiro Luebano Jr., 30, was booked into the Curry County Detention Center on Tuesday evening. He faces felony charges of trafficking methamphetamine, disarming a peace officer and battery upon a peace officer, along with misdemeanor charges for possession of drug paraphernalia, driving with a suspended or revoked license and resisting, evading or obstructing an officer,

Luebano remained at the jail Thursday on $40,000 bond. No court date was listed, and it was not immediately known if he had an attorney.

According to the criminal complaint filed in magistrate court:

• The Region V Drug Task Force arrived around 12:15 p.m. at a traffic stop near Grand and Thornton streets. An officer requested an additional unit, and noted the male driver had conflicting stories with his female passenger and appeared nervous.

• The female passenger, identified as Luebano’s girlfriend, said the two were returning from a trip to Albuquerque and had six ounces of methamphetamine. She was initially arrested and taken to the police station with Luebano, but later released.

• When the officer attempted to handcuff Luebano, he escaped and led the officer on a short foot chase. The two had a brief physical altercation, where the officer noted Luebano attempted to take away his gun and kicked him repeatedly in the chest.

• When a search warrant was approved, two plastic bags were discovered containing a total of 465 grams (about 16.4 ounces) of substance that initially tested positive for methamphetamine.
