  • Local officials say cities set for water this summer

    Alisa Boswell|Updated Jun 22, 2017

Despite triple-digit temperatures, officials in Clovis and Portales are not worried about running out of water this summer. City of Portales Public Works Director John DeSha said Portales residents and entities have done such a good job with conservation efforts in the last few years that Portales is in a much better position with water now than it has been in years with a steady decline in water consumption — it has dropped about 20 percent in the last few years. “One of the nice things that ENMU (Eastern New Mexico Uni...

  • Failure to perform got Comey fired

    Rube Render|Updated Jun 21, 2017

James Comey was well aware that he worked for the president of the United States and that he served at the pleasure of the president. He also knew the president could fire him at any time for any reason. While he knew this at the intellectual level, Comey never believed he would be fired. In March, while speaking at a cybersecurity conference in Boston, Comey told his audience, “You’re stuck with me for about another 6 1/2 years.” As a creature of the Washington polit...

  • Satisfying watching parties fight

    Kent McManigal|Updated Jun 21, 2017

Besides being an experienced negotiator, I’m beginning to suspect President Trump might be an excellent magician. Or, at least an expert in misdirection. He gets observers to focus on one hand’s flamboyant flourishes, while doing the work he wants to accomplish with the hand they aren’t paying attention to. If you don’t believe this, notice how he says and does trivial, even silly, things that get all the attention. While people are laughing at him, he is doing things that cou...

  • Neither side blameless for political fire

    Albuquerque Journal|Updated Jun 20, 2017

The partisan rancor and toxic incivility that have gripped the nation since last year’s presidential campaign spilled over into bloodshed last Wednesday. James T. Hodgkinson, 66, opened fire on a group of Republican congressmen practicing for a fundraising baseball game against their Democrat colleagues. Although Tim Slater, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Washington field office, stopped short of calling the shootings an assassination attempt, that’s exactly what it was. Hodgkinson, an avowed progressive and Donal...
