Failure to perform got Comey fired

James Comey was well aware that he worked for the president of the United States and that he served at the pleasure of the president.

He also knew the president could fire him at any time for any reason.

While he knew this at the intellectual level, Comey never believed he would be fired.

In March, while speaking at a cybersecurity conference in Boston, Comey told his audience, “You’re stuck with me for about another 6 1/2 years.”

As a creature of the Washington political establishment, Comey assumed that all the political players involved knew the rules of the game. James Comey never realized President Trump’s idea of what it meant to say that someone “worked for him” was different than Washington’s impression of what that meant.

No matter how many times you say Trump is not a politician he’s a businessman, political operatives can’t seem to comprehend what that means. When a president asks someone to handle a problem for him more than once and they fail to accomplish that task, it is cause for termination.

According to his own testimony, Comey told the president, “I explained that we had briefed the leadership of Congress on exactly which individuals we were investigating and that we had told those Congressional leaders that we were not personally investigating President Trump. I reminded him I had previously told him that.”

Trump asked Comey to tell the public the same thing. Trump’s comment was the need to “lift the cloud” so he could proceed with his agenda.

Trump did not ask Comey to close the Russian investigation. Rather the president said that “it would be good to find out” if any of his associates had done something wrong. Comey assured the president he “would see what we could do.”

The straw that broke the camel’s back was a phone call from Trump to Comey. The president wanted to know what had been done about his request for the public to be made aware that he was not under investigation by the FBI.

Comey responded, “I said only that the way to handle it was to have the White House counsel call the acting deputy attorney general. He said that was what he would do and the call ended.”

Comey’s mistake was not realizing that the president had directed him to solve the problem. Failure to perform will get one fired in any job except politics. Trump fired him for not doing his job.
