Weekly New Mexico fishing report

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and New Mexico Department of Game & Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake — Fishing was very good using curly tail grubs, spinners, wooly buggers, tubes, jerk baits, crank baits and night crawlers for smallmouth bass. Fishing for walleye was fair to good for anglers using minnows, leeches, curly tail grubs, bottom bouncer night crawler combinations and crank baits. Fishing was fair using worms for perch. Fishing was slow to fair using Panther Martins, Fisher Chick spinners, PowerBait and Fire Balls for rainbow trout. We had no other reports.

Animas River — Water flow near Aztec on Monday morning was 3,250 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Albuquerque Area Drains — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bluewater Lake — Fishing was slow with just a few tiger muskies caught by anglers using spoons, crank baits and swim baits. We had no other reports.

Brazos River — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Canjilon Lakes — Closed by the U.S. Forest Service until further notice due to danger from falling trees. They are not expected to open in 2017.

Chama River — Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 591 cfs and 324 cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was good using night crawlers, spoons, night crawlers and PowerBait for rainbow and brown trout. Trout fishing below Abiquiu was fair to good using wooly buggers, copper John Barrs and night crawlers. New special trout water — The river from the USGS gauging station to the confluence of the Rio Nutrias is now catch and release only using single barbless hook artificial flies and lures.

Cochiti Lake — Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits, jerk baits, tubes and jigs for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Joelle Dorrance of Albuquerque was here Saturday and caught a 16-inch largemouth bass. She was using a jointed shad crank bait. Fishing was fair using spinners and crank baits for white bass. Fishing was fair using shrimp and liver for catfish. We had no other reports.

El Vado Lake — Fishing was good trolling with yellow Panther Martins for a mixed bag of kokanee salmon and rainbow trout. A few bass were caught by anglers using curly tail grubs, spinners and crank baits. The boat ramp at the north end of the lake has opened.

Fenton Lake — Fishing was very good using assorted colors and scents of PowerBait, Fire Balls, meal worms, copper John Barrs, chamois leeches, black leeches, wooly buggers, caddis imitations, parachute Adams, spoons and Pistol Petes for trout. Chris Griego of Albuquerque caught and released an 18-inch cutthroat trout and five others in the 15-inch range June 17. He was using copper John Barrs.

Heron Lake — Fishing from boats was slow with just a few rainbow trout and an occasional kokanee salmon caught by anglers trolling yellow Panther Martins at about 18 feet. Bank fishing was slow to fair using PowerBait for rainbow trout. We had no other reports.

Jackson Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Jemez Waters — Stream flow on the Jemez River near Jemez Springs on Monday morning was 22.3 cfs. The heat has had a major effect on the stream fishing here this past week. We had reports of slow fishing on the Jemez, Rio Guadalupe and the San Antonio. Fishing on the Cebolla was fair to good using copper John Barrs, worms and salmon eggs for trout. Fishing access has remained open to all streams west of US Hwy 4 while crews battle the Cajete fire.

Laguna del Campo — We had no reports from anglers this week. The lake will remain open through October.

Lake Farmington — Fishing was good using PowerBait, Fire Balls, Pistol Petes and spoons for trout. We had no other reports.

Manzano Lake — Fishing was good using PowerBait, Pistol Petes under a bubble and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Navajo Lake — Fishing was good using minnows and small jigs for crappie. Fishing was good using tubes, swim baits, baby brush hogs, worms, jigs, jerk baits, crank baits, wooly buggers and crawfish flies for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was fair to good using jigs, swim baits, minnows, jerk baits and crank baits for northern pike. Fishing was fair to good trolling kokanee killers, double whammies and Arnies tipped with corn or PowerBait for kokanee salmon. A few rainbow and brown trout were caught by anglers using Kastmasters, Panther Martins and PowerBait. We had no other reports.

San Gregorio Lake — The lake was recently stocked. We had no reports from anglers this week.

San Juan River — Stream flow from Navajo Reservoir on Monday was 4,750 cfs. The flow is expected to ramp down beginning June 23 and last about 12 days. The next releases are scheduled Friday, June 23, to 4,000 cfs and Monday, June 26, to 3,400 cfs. Trout fishing from drift boats was good using San Juan worms, orange and peach egg patterns, wooly buggers, large bead-head pheasant tail nymphs and orange and red annelids. We had no other reports.

Seven Springs Brood Pond — Fishing was very good using PowerBait, Fire Balls, Panther Martin spinners, Pistol Petes and worms for trout.

Tingley Beach — Fishing was fair to good using hot dogs, shrimp, night crawlers and beef liver for catfish. Fishing was fair using worms for bluegill. We had no other reports.

Trout Lakes — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Northeast

Charette Lakes — Fishing was slow to fair using PowerBait and Fire Balls for trout. We had no other reports.

Clayton Lake — Fishing was slow with just a few trout caught by anglers using assorted PowerBait, worms and Fire Balls. We had no other reports. Due to low water conditions, the boat ramp remains closed.

Cimarron River — Stream flow near Cimarron on Monday was 32.4 cfs. Trout fishing was good using San Juan worms, golden stone flies, PMDs, brassies, bead-head pheasant tail nymphs, worms and Fire Balls. Trout fishing at the Gravel Pit Lakes was good using Pistol Petes, PowerBait, Fire Balls and worms.

Conchas Lake — Fishing was fair to good using Texas rigged finesse worms, tubes, senkos, jigs, creature baits, curly tail grubs and topwater lures for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing was fair using tubes, leeches, minnows and crank baits for white bass and walleye. The best walleye reports came from anglers fishing at night. We had no other reports.

Costilla Creek — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Cowles Ponds — Fishing was good using PowerBait, Fire Balls, Pistol Petes and spinners for trout.

Coyote Creek — Trout fishing was good using elk hair caddis, parachute Adams, copper John Barrs, worms and salmon eggs.

Eagle Rock Lake — Fishing was good using PowerBait, Fire Balls, worms, Pistol Petes and Kastmasters for trout.

Eagle Nest Lake — Fishing for trout was good using PowerBait from the bank and from anchored boats. Anglers also had good luck trolling with Platte River specials, Christmas tree kokanee killers or double whammies combinations baited with corn, salmon eggs or PowerBait. Anglers trolling for trout also picked up a few kokanee salmon. Fishing for perch was good from the bank and from anchored boats for anglers using worms. Fishing was slow to fair using jerk baits, swim baits and large streamers for northern pike. We had no other reports.

Gallinas River — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Hopewell Lake — Shawn Hatten of Rio Rancho reported good to great fishing for brook trout this past week. He and his son, Oryan, had a great time catching and releasing trout from the lake and from Placer Creek. They were using small dry flies including elk hair caddis and Mayflies. We had no other reports.

Lake Alice — Trout fishing was good using PowerBait, Pistol Petes, copper John Barrs, wooly buggers, parachute Adams and Kastmasters.

Lake Maloya — Trout fishing was very good using gold Colorado spoons, Pistol Petes, brown bead-head wooly buggers, elk hair caddis, parachute Adams and PowerBait. The best reports are coming from anglers fishing the evening hours. The lake has been recently stocked with trout in the 5- to 8-pound range and several were hooked this past weekend.

Los Pinos River — Fishing was good nymphing with bead-head pheasant tails and bead-head hares ears and using salmon eggs for rainbow and brown trout.

Maxwell Lake 13 — Fishing was slow for all species.

Monastery Lake — Fishing was good using Pistol Petes, PowerBait and Fire Balls for trout.

Morphy Lake — Fishing was fair to good using Pistol Petes, wooly buggers, spinners, PowerBait and Fire Balls for trout.

Pecos River — Streamflow near Pecos on Monday was 111 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using worms, Fire Balls, San Juan worms, prince nymphs, stone fly nymphs and dry dropper combinations of parachute Adams and hares ears nymphs for trout.

Red River — Stream flow below the hatchery on Monday was 220 cfs. Fishing was fair using PowerBait, night crawlers, spinners and wooly buggers for trout.

Red River City Ponds — Fishing was good using PowerBait, Pistol Petes and salmon eggs for trout.

Rio Grande — Stream flow on Monday at the Taos Junction Bridge was 1,360 cfs. Fishing on the upper river was slow to fair using spoons, poundmeisters, wooly buggers, San Juan worms and night crawlers. We had no other reports.

Rio Hondo — Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 151 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Mora — As of Monday, stream flow near Terrero was 28.6 cfs. Fishing was good using night crawlers and Fire Balls for trout.

Rio Pueblo — Stream flow near Penasco on Monday was 78.6 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Barbara River — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Cruz Reservoir — Fishing was fair to good using wooly buggers, gold spoons, Fisher Chick spinners, PowerBait, worms and Fire Balls for trout. We had no other reports.

Shuree Ponds — Opens for the season July 1.

Springer Lake — We had no reports.

Storrie Lake — Fishing was good using wooly buggers, Pistol Petes, PowerBait and Fire Balls for trout.

Stubblefield Lake — Fishing was fair using jig and grub combinations for largemouth bass and walleye.

Ute Lake — Fishing for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass was good using senkos, tubes, curly tail grubs and finesse worms. A few bass were caught on top water lures worked early and late in the day. Fishing for walleye was slow to fair using crank baits, jigs and leeches in deep water. A few were also caught by anglers using swim baits and senkos in the trees. Fishing for bluegill was very good using small senkos and grubs and worms under a bobber. Fishing for crappie, white bass and catfish was slow. The surface water temp was in the low to mid 70s.

Winsor Creek — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Southwest

Alumni Pond — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bear Canyon Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bill Evans Lake — Fishing was slow to fair using chicken liver and worms for catfish. We had no other reports.

Caballo Lake — Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits, topwater lures, curly tail grubs and minnows for white bass and an occasional walleye. Night fishing was fair to good using cut bait, chicken liver and shrimp for catfish. We had no other reports.

Elephant Butte Lake — Fishing was fair to good using crank baits, jerk baits, minnows and grubs for white bass and a few walleye. Fishing was fair to good using topwater lures, creature baits, crank baits, jerk baits, senkos and tubes for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing was good using cut bait, hot dogs, dead minnows and chicken liver for catfish. The best catfish action again this week was at night. We had no other reports.

Escondida Lake — Fishing was slow to fair using chicken liver, hot dogs and shrimp for catfish. Fishing was fair to good using worms for bluegill. We had no other reports.

Gila River — Stream flow on Monday morning was 24.3 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Glenwood Pond — Fishing was good using PowerBait for trout.

Lake Roberts — Fishing was good using worms, senkos, baby brush hogs, tubes and crank baits for largemouth bass. Fishing was good using spoons, spinners, Fire Balls, worms and PowerBait for trout. Fishing was good using homemade dough bait, chicken liver and night crawlers for catfish. We had no other reports.

Percha Dam — Fishing was slow for all species.

Quemado Lake — Fishing was good using PowerBait, spoons and spinners for trout. Fishing for tiger muskie was slow.

Rancho Grande Ponds — The United States Marine Corps Toys for Tots is sponsoring a Catfish Fishing Derby 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. July 4 with prizes awarded to adults and children. For more detailed information, contact the Toys for Tots coordinator, Amanda Landrum at (575) 590-2307.

Rio Grande — Stream flow below Elephant Butte Monday morning was 2,460 cfs. Fishing in the San Marcial area was fair using chicken liver, beef liver and cut bait for catfish. Fishing below Elephant Butte and Caballo was fair to good using night crawlers, liver and cut bait for catfish. Fishing was good using corn for carp. We had no other reports.

Snow Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Young Pond — Fishing was slow for all species.

Southeast

Alto Lake — Fishing was slow to fair using liver and night crawlers for catfish. We had no other reports.

Bataan Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Black River — Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 2.49 cfs. Fishing was slow for all species.

Blue Hole Park Pond — Fishing was slow with just a few catfish caught by anglers using liver and night crawlers.

Bonito Lake — Closed until further notice by the city of Alamogordo due to fire damage.

Bosque Redondo Lake — Fishing was slow to fair using chicken liver, night crawlers and shrimp for catfish. We had no other reports.

Bottomless Lakes — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Brantley Lake — Anglers are required to catch and release all fish here as high levels of pesticides have been found in some fish. Fishing was fair to good using Ben rigs, senkos, deep diving crank baits, grubs and creature baits for largemouth bass and white bass.

Carlsbad Municipal Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Chaparral Park Lake — Fishing was slow to fair using chicken liver, hot dogs and worms for catfish. We had no other reports.

El Rito Creek — Fishing was slow to fair using PowerBait and spoons for trout. We had no other reports.

Eunice Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Green Meadow Lake — Fishing was slow for all species.

Greene Acres Lake — Fishing was slow with just a few catfish caught by anglers using night crawlers, liver and PowerBait. We had no other reports.

Grindstone Reservoir — Fishing for trout was slow. Fishing was fair using worms for bluegill. Fishing was fair using shrimp, hot dogs and crawdads for catfish. We had no other reports.

Jal Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Van — Fishing was slow to fair using chicken liver, blood bait and homemade dough bait for catfish. We had no other reports.

Oasis Park Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Pecos River — Stream flow below Sumner Lake on Monday was 1,500 cfs. The area below Sumner Lake is closed to fishing due to a high water release. We had no reports from anglers.

Perch Lake — Fishing was fair using chicken liver and blood bait for catfish. We had no other reports.

Ruidoso River — Stream flow at Hollywood on Monday was 6.63 cfs. Fishing was slow.

Santa Rosa Lake — Fishing was fair using Ricos, plastic worms, senkos, swim baits, jerk baits, crank baits, live crawdads, live worms and pink grubs for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Anglers fishing with live bait also caught a few bluegill and crappie. Fishing for walleye was slow with just a few caught by anglers trolling crank baits and using jigs tipped with grubs. We had no other reports. A water release started June 16 and is expected to continue for 15 days.

Sumner Lake — Fishing was fair using curly tail grubs, crank baits, bottom bouncer night crawler rigs and jig and minnow combinations for walleye. Fishing was fair using crank baits, jerk baits, tubes, worms, creature baits and senkos for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits, grubs and minnows for white bass. Fishing was fair to good using cut bait and liver for catfish. We had no other reports. A water release began on June 19 and is expected to run for 15 days.
