The county is requesting a 5-percent increase in fees for solid waste collection and t...

  • Sumner Lake water release begins

De Baca County News, Syndicated content|Updated May 25, 2021

FORT SUMNER — The Carlsbad Irrigation District is planning a large release of water from Sumner Lake starting this week. The release is expected to contain 8,000-10,000 acre-feet of water and will require about 3 1/2 days to accomplish, said Sumner Lake Dam Tender Mike Cantrell. The water will be released at a volume of 1,200-1,300 cubic feet per second, so area residents can expect a full Pecos River during the release. There is no corresponding release from Santa Rosa Lake, so the level at Sumner Lake is expected to drop s...

  • New Mexico adds COVID-19 fatalities after audit

    Staff and wire reports|Updated May 25, 2021

SANTA FE — New Mexico added more than 110 fatalities to its official COVID-19 death toll Monday as the Department of Health announced the completion of an audit of public health records. The adjustment pushed the state’s coronavirus-related deaths to 4,245 — a jump of 114 fatalities since the final report of last week. All but one of the deaths — that of a man in his 60s from Bernalillo County — was due to the audit of health records, according to the state figures. David Morgan, a spokesman for the Department of Health, s...

  • Faith: Entropy pervasive, but not everything runs down

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated May 25, 2021

Entropy. What pops into your head when you hear that word? Well, just to prove that I listened some in a science class 4-plus years ago, here ya go: “The tendency of a body in motion to remain in motion and a body at rest to remain at rest.” Impressive, right? Not so much. Because, I’m now reminded, that is the definition of “inertia,” not “entropy.” OK. Let me think. “Entropy” is “a wasting away or progressive decline due to disuse or disease — for example, a muscle due...

  • Roosevelt officials welcome new engineer

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated May 25, 2021

PORTALES — Roosevelt County commissioners welcomed the New Mexico Department of Transportation’s new district engineer, and hoped to continue a spirit of communication fostered by the previous engineer. Francisco Sanchez, the engineer for DOT’s District Two, said he wanted to continue the relationship predecessor Tim Parker had with Roosevelt and other counties in the district, and was optimistic new state funding would help the department stay ahead of what he called a “deterioration curve” for state roads. Recent years, Sa...

The Lady Rams won five of six matches in singles and took two of the three doubles contests, all in straight sets. The only wins for the Lady Wildcats came at No. 4 singles and No. 2 doubles. • Lady Cats hold on for sweep

the Staff of The News|Updated May 25, 2021

CLOVIS — For the second and third times within a week, Portales High’s softball team came up short against Clovis. But the Lady Rams at least made it a little more interesting. The Lady Wildcats posted a 10-4 win over PHS in the opener of a Saturday doubleheader at Lady Wildcat Field, then survived a serious comeback by Portales before nailing down a 17-14 victory in Game 2. The previous Monday at Wheeler Park in Portales, CHS dominated the Lady Rams 16-2. “We’re very young, and we don’t have a whole lot of varsity experienc...

CLOVIS - There's not a lot left to prove this spring for the Texico girls and Clovis Christian boys golf squads. Both will have a chance to contend for Class 1-3A state championships in about a month. Right now, it's more about fine-tuning things. On Monday, the Lady Wolverines and Eagles cruised unchallenged to team titles in the Clovis Christian Invite at Colonial Park Golf Course. Texico shot a four-player total of 342 to 388 for Clovis High and 409 for Dexter, while...

    Dave Wagner, Staff writer|Updated May 25, 2021

TEXICO - Faced with its opening District 4-4A twin bill on Tuesday at Artesia, Portales baseball coach Ruben Tellez decided to get a look at his group of left-handed pitchers on Monday night. The Rams paraded six hurlers to the mound, the first five of them lefties. Four-time defending Class 2A state champion Texico put together a pair of five-run innings to hand PHS an 11-2 setback. "We were just trying to see who could do it on the mound for us," said Tellez, whose squad...

  • Have a little trouble identifying things I see

    Betty Williamson, Local columnist|Updated May 25, 2021

I have a proven record of misidentifying things I see. It isn’t getting better with time. Once it was an owl. I would have bet money on it. It was nighttime and our dog was in the front yard barking like a maniac. I flipped on the porch light and peered out to see what the cause of the ruckus might be. On the ground, maybe 30 feet from the porch, I was met by two glowing eyes, their gaze fixed upon me. It was unquestionably an owl. There was simply no doubt. I knew it s...

  • Opinion: What we do lives on in others

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Updated May 25, 2021

When you’ve lived a full life, you think back on those who helped shape you into who you are. Parents and spouses immediately come to mind for most folks, but people you meet along the way also make their mark on you. When we’re young, our families shape us, and when we get older it’s the people we live with or marry who influence us the most. I’m sure I’m not alone in saying my mother and father raised me with the values that have remained with me throughout my life. And, even though we split up years ago, my wife of 20-plu...

  • Opinion: Cybergangs need to be treated as threat they are

    Albuquerque Journal, Syndicated content|Updated May 25, 2021

“Wake-up call” is perhaps one of the most over-used phrases in the English language. And one of the most ignored. The recent shutdown of the Colonial Pipeline because of hackers, apparently a criminal gang working out of Russia, is a case in point. The pipeline stretches from Texas to New Jersey and transports half the fuel consumed on the East Coast. When the pipeline was shut down, panic buying ensued with long lines and gas shortages. Hundreds of stations ran out of fuel. The company that operates the pipeline paid rou...

  • Opinion: Arguments for government work against it

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Updated May 25, 2021

Any argument against the idea of having a free society — one free of political government — also works against the idea of having such a government holding society down. The only reason anyone still tries to make this argument is because crimes are called by different names when they are committed by government employees instead of by the self-employed. When you pretend criminal acts aren’t criminal, you can justify anything. Theft is called “taxation,” “asset forfeiture,...

  • Curry inmate attempted suicide on Sunday

the Staff of The News|Updated May 25, 2021

CLOVIS — An inmate at the Curry County Adult Detention Center attempted suicide Sunday, and was treated at Plains Regional Medical Center. Interim jail administrator Joseph Alaniz did not identify the inmate, other than to note he had a slew of charges that may or may not have been a motive for the suicide attempt. First responders were called to the detention center at 2:38 p.m. Sunday after discovering the inmate alone in his cell with a standard issue blanket tied around his neck. The inmate Alaniz said, was back at the f...

    Elizabeth Larsen, Correspondent|Updated May 25, 2021

CLOVIS - After 429 days with the surround sound silenced and the big screen dark, North Plains 7 reopened in Clovis on Friday. People on both sides of the ticket booth said they are excited to be back at the movies. Suzette Ramirez, the theater's manager, described the closures brought on by COVID-19 as a "struggle," for her and other theater employees. But Friday marked a brighter future. "It wasn't even a struggle to get people to come back to work, so that was wonderful....

  • Celebrating Wildcat graduates

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated May 25, 2021

CLOVIS - As the soon-to-be former students of Clovis High School made their way onto the field of Leon Williams Stadium, they were greeted by a raucous crowd. The celebration, Principal Jay Brady said, was well deserved. "These kids," Brady said, "deserve every inch of this celebration." A senior year of high school, conducted entirely during the COVID-19 pandemic, came to a conclusion for the CHS 2021 class on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Due to virus concerns, the school held...
