  • Clovis job fair intended to help businesses recover

    Molly Adamson, Staff writer|Updated May 3, 2021

As of Wednesday, 41.6% of New Mexico's eligible residents had received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. Once the state hits 60 percent, it will abandon its color-coded system, reopening completely — welcome news for restaurants and other local businesses that have been hit hard during the pandemic. But for now, area businesses are still struggling. In a press release issued April 28, the Clovis/Curry County Chamber of Commerce reported many businesses and restaurants nationwide and locally are in desperate need of e...

  • Opinion: Afghanistan war should have ended 20 years ago

    Walt Rubel, Syndicated content|Updated May 1, 2021

In his 2007 book, former CIA Director George Tenet boasts that the first U.S. covert teams were in Afghanistan 16 days after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. “Less than two and a half months later, a core group of 90 CIA paramilitary officers, along with a small number of special forces units, in combination with Afghan militias and supported by a massive aerial bombardment by the U.S. military, had defeated the Taliban and killed or captured one quarter of Usama bin Ladin’s top lieutenants, including his mil...

  • Opinion: Open letter and apology to children

    Leonard Pitts, Syndicated content|Updated May 1, 2021

An open letter to the children: We owe you an apology. Meaning all of us in the generations above you. We had one job where you were concerned, and that was to keep you safe. “Save the children,” pleaded a man named Marvin Gaye a long time ago. But we didn’t. We failed. And for that, I’m sorry. You deserved so much more. I offer this apology in the names of more of you than there is space to list. It is in the name of Sherdavia Jenkins, who was 9 and Jacob Hall, who was 6....

  • Opinion: Peaceful protests may become a pipe dream

    Christine Flowers, Syndicated content|Updated May 1, 2021

When the Nazis wanted to march through Skokie, Ill., many of the residents were horrified. A large percentage were Jewish, and some had been interned in concentration camps. The memory of those camps was still vivid, since this was 1978, a mere three decades after World War II had ended. I was in high school when the controversy erupted. At the time, the ACLU defended the Nazi group, which never ended up marching. But the fact that the storied civil rights organization swooped...

  • Opinion: Oscars nearly as torturous as Biden

    Michael Reagan, Syndicated content|Updated May 1, 2021

It was a rough week for conservatives, Republicans and all Americans. The torture started last Sunday evening with the Academy Awards ceremony, which sounded like it was produced by the AOC/Stacey Abrams wing of the Democrat Party. I say “sounded,” because I didn’t actually waste three hours of my life watching Hollywood millionaires patting themselves on their backs for their awesome talents and even more awesome woke politics. As I’ve done in past years, I waited for the...

  • Opinion: Biden plans arrogant, bound to fail

    Rich Lowry, Syndicated content|Updated May 1, 2021

There’s believing your own press releases. And then, there’s believing your own delusions of grandeur. Joe Biden should look at the mirror every day and see a president elected on the basis of the unpopularity of his predecessor at a time when the country was slammed by a once-in-100-years pandemic. Instead, by every account, he sees a transformative leader with a mandate to change America as rapidly and irreversibly as possible. As the news site Axios noted, Biden wants his...

  • Opinion: Free speech still rules - even for mouthy teens

    David Stevens, Publisher|Updated May 1, 2021

The U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday considered whether public school officials can punish students for smarting off on social media. Hopefully it won’t take long to rule in favor of the First Amendment. But the 2017 incident that sparked the court case does provide some teachable moments about respect for others and consequences that can follow bad behavior. The background, according to The Los Angeles Times: A student known in court filings as B.L. was upset when she failed t...

  • National Day of Prayer event scheduled for noon Thursday

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated May 1, 2021

CLOVIS — Not that they’d ever take it for granted, but last year’s National Day of Prayer with participants limited to their cars made the non-pandemic events of years past just a little more special. “I miss this openness, being able to pray with everyone,” Sistar Yancy of Clovis’ Christian Believers in advance of this year’s event in downtown Clovis. “Being together, I miss that. I’m excited we can do this again. We need prayer, we need it more than ever at this point.” The event is scheduled for noon Thursday in front of t...
