SANTA FE — Legislation to establish a New Mexico Civil Rights Act — a proposal sparked by protests against racism and police misconduct — won approval in the state Senate early Wednesday, pushing it to the brink of final passage. The measure passed the House a month ago, but senators revised the bill, so it will have to go back to the other chamber for agreement on the amendments. It passed the Senate on a 26-15 vote about 10 minutes after midnight. The legislation, House Bill 4, emerged quickly this year as one of the most...

Commissioners were shown the roof in the hog show arena at the county fairgrounds and given two options for the roof repair following the June 2020 hail storm. County Manager Amber Hamilton explained to commissioners that one option was to replace the internal gutter system that already exists within the building, but it would likely begin to leak again at some point. The other repair option is to go with...

  • Faith: As an English major, I am troubled by 'woke'

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated Mar 16, 2021

I am a self-confessed English major. And I'm choosing words carefully here, words that in our present cultural climate serve as — take your pick — solemn and grim warnings, red stop signs surrounded by flashing lights, cease and desist orders complete with dire penalties lawyer-littered in pages of small print. I am (pause here for display of deep emotion as a substitute for rational thinking) concerned. I am (pause here for display of deep emotion as a substitute for rat...

the Staff of The News|Updated Mar 16, 2021

TYLER, Texas — It took some doing, to say the least, for Eastern New Mexico University’s baseball team to salvage the finale of a Lone Star Conference series against Texas-Tyler on Saturday. The Greyhounds scored four runs on one play — involving three Tyler errors — in the top of the 10th and survived a wacky bottom half to edge the 17th-ranked Patriots 10-9. UTT, which took Saturday’s opener 6-1, won two of three in the series. With the bases loaded and no one out in the 10th, ENMU sophomore Cole Luedeking hit a RBI grounde...
