Thirteen candidates sign up for city positions

Clovis' mayor’s position and four city commission seats will be contested when voters go to the polls on March 5.

Thirteen city residents signed up Tuesday for six positions on the ballot.

Incumbent District 1 Commissioner George Jones is the only candidate who will be unopposed, unless a write-in candidate emerges Jan. 16.

All the other positions will have competition.

Mayor: Incumbent Mike Morris will face off against Girl Scouts regional manager Misty Ponce.

District 2: Small-business owner Gail Tarson will run against reproductive rights activist Victoria Robledo. Incumbent Lauren Rowley declined to run for re-election.

District 3: Debbie Zamora, appointed to the position late last year, will face Doug Pettigrew, an Air Force veteran who was director of internal audits at Allsup’s for 20 years. The term is for two years.

District 3: Incumbent Helen Casaus is running against Bryan Davis, a Clovis native and former missionary in Mexico, and Paul Nelson, a former information technology director for the city of Clovis. That's a four-year term, as is the mayor’s position and all the city commission spots except the other post in District 3.

District 4: Incumbent Chris Bryant will be opposed by community advocate Josefita Griego and Dean Hardage, an Army veteran who works at Dairy Farmers of America in Portales.

Early voting begins Feb. 6.

We'll have more information on the candidates in Sunday's paper.
