Pages past, July 13: Scouts find adventure in Alaska

On this date …

1972: Texico-Farwell scouts had been exploring Alaska. The State Line Tribune newspaper offered daily reports from their adventure.

On a recent Sunday, the group had “enjoyed pioneer family hospitality” near Copper Center, Alaska. They were hosted by a family named Swisher who “started from scratch when they came to Alaska, building their own log cabins and clearing their own land,” the newspaper reported.

The scouts had attended Kenny Lake Nondenominational Church services where members allowed the visitors to select hymns for the service.

After church, the kids purchased fireworks and set them off at a campsite about 30 miles from the Canadian border.
