Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
LOVINGTON — Portales High’s Michael Riess and Clovis High’s Sammy Fuentes each finished in the top five on Thursday in a pre-district cross country meet.
The event, originally scheduled for Portales, was moved to Lovington in midweek due to the unavailability of the course in Portales, PHS coach Laura McNeill said.
Riess ran a time of 16 minutes, 58 seconds in the five-kilometer event, trailing only Lovington’s Derrick Castellanos (16:50). Meantime, Fuentes came in fifth with a clocking of 17:44, helping the Wildcats finish second with 63 team points to 49 for Lovington.
The Lady Wildcats finished fifth in the girls event with 82 points. Roswell Goddard scored 49 points to take team honors, with New Mexico Military second at 55.
Freshman Kira Tree led the Lady Cats, coming in at 24:20 for 12th place. Portales had three runners, with sophomore Brooke McNeill leading the Lady Rams in 26:09 for 24th place.
Lovington’s Vanessa Gallegos took individual honors with a time of 20:05.
Both Clovis and Portales return to action next weekend in district meets. Clovis will be in the 4-5A district meet on Friday at Roswell High, while PHS is in Roswell on Saturday for 4-4A competition hosted by Goddard.
