Clovis wins FCCLA awards
ALBUQUERQUE — The Clovis High Family, Career and Community Leaders of America chapter had national qualifiers in five categories, and received a pair of team awards during the FCCLA state leadership conference March 21-23 in Albuquerque.
Clovis won awards for largest high school chapter with 71 members, and an incredible chapter award for its 37 percent increase in membership.
National qualifiers were:
n Yudith Lopez-Cordova (advocacy)
n Heidy Alonso (chapter in review display)
n Kylie Koss and Jeremy Harguess (chapter service project portfolio)
n Angel Morales (fashion construction)
n Dafne Acosta, Fatima Fuentes and Yvonne Valles (life event planning)
Other awards included Leslie Garcia (silver) and Jayce Hahn (bronze) in state-level pastry arts, and a national silver award for Eric Borges in chapter service project display.
Amy Garcia is the CHS FCCLA adviser.
Choirs place at contest
RIO RANCHO — The Clovis High School women’s select choir came away with a first-place finish, and the chamber choir a third Saturday at the New Mexico Activities Association’s state choir contest at Cleveland High School.
The women’s select tied for first place in treble choirs, marking the choral program’s first state championship, while the chamber choir was third for Class 5A mixed choirs.
The choir program is under the direction of Sean Galloway and assisted by Peggy Brady.
Heinrich accepts nominations
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Sen. Martin Heinrich, D-New Mexico, is now accepting applications from high school students and recent high school graduates seeking a nomination into a U.S. service academy.
Applications will be accepted until Oct. 11.
An information session will be held 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Piedra Vista High School in Farmington. Other sessions will be Tuesday at Santa Fe High School, April 18 at Volcano Vista High School and April 30 at Mayfield High School, with each set for 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Parents or prospective applicants who are unable to attend an information session are encouraged to visit Heinrich’s Academy Nominations page for application deadlines and more information about the nomination process.
Four of the five service academies — U.S. Military Academy (West Point), U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy — require a Congressional, vice-presidential, or service-connected nomination. The U.S. Coast Guard Academy does not require a nomination.
