1983: Clovis artist Chuck Glikas won two top awards at the Oklahoma Wildlife Arts Festival held in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

A pelican painting by Glikas was named first place in the shore bird competition, and best of show in the North American fowl competition.

A lifelong artist, Glikas had been painting for the past 10 years, primarily wildlife. The festival featured the third largest juried show of its kind in the nation, with the works of 70 of the nation's top wildlife artists.

1968: Air Force Capt. Dale Noyd was found guilty during a court martial held at Cannon Air Force Base based on his refusal to train a pilot who would have likely ended up in Vietnam.

Noyd is remembered as one of the first "conscientious objectors" to a specific war, rather than to war in general. He had written a letter to the Air Force two years earlier stating his objections to being involved in training anyone destined for the conflict in southeast Asia.

During testimony reported in the Clovis News-Journal, Noyd said he was not opposed to all wars, "just the war in Vietnam."

He explained that he was not a "universal pacifist," but said "there are limits, no matter what a government asks."

Noyd was sentenced to one year of hard labor and dishonorably discharged from the Air Force.
