1967: Cannon Air Force Base was preparing to host a firepower display featuring 18 different aircraft at the Melrose bombing range.

Air Force Academy cadets were invited to one show, while anyone interested was admitted to a second performance.

1967: Security National Bank of Roswell was inviting eastern New Mexico residents to see "the internationally famous Peter Hurd portrait of President Johnson" on display in the bank's lobby.

Hurd was contracted to paint the portrait of the 36th president, but Johnson declared it "the ugliest thing I ever saw" and refused to hang it in the White House.

In response, Hurd loaned the painting for public displays.

Today it hangs in the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery.
