1961: A 14-year-old California boy was riding his bicycle to visit family in Clovis.

Billy Hall, of Sacramento, California, had made it to Santa Rosa, New Mexico, in six days — thanks to a truck driver who drove him across the desert.

Family members in Clovis said the boy would have logged 1,036 miles on his bike after he completed the trip from Santa Rosa.

He arrived safely the next day.

1956: The annual Curry County Women’s Extension Clubs flower show had been declared the “biggest ever,” by organizers.

The Clovis News-Journal reported more than 200 people attended and flowers filled the north and south library at Clovis High School.

Pleasant Hill had captured first place in the club arrangement competition.

Mrs. Lucien Madole of the Hollene club had the only “perfect” arrangement, while Mrs. Foster Scott of Clovis picked up multiple awards.

1941: Disappointment in a love affair was the most likely reason a 21-year-old man ended his life by drinking poison at a Pleasant Hill farm home.

Law officers investigating the death said they found a suicide note near the empty bottle of poison.
