A new year can bring resolution, relief or hope. Ashley Cohen, 27, of Portales, is heading into 2015 full of optimism.

“I plan on meeting my husband by the end of the year,” she said. “I just think that this is going to be the year for me.

“Usually I don’t try to date or meet people, but I’ve been alone for a while so I plan on being proactive this year.”

Not everyone is heading into 2015 with such lofty goals or expectations. Some are aiming for contentment.

“I don’t really make resolutions,” said Bobby Simmonds of Clovis. “But if I had to say one thing, it would be to just try to be happy and enjoy life now that I’m retired — which means playing golf as much as possible.”

Troy Harris plans on moving from Portales to Pennsylvania in a month, and for his resolution he has safety on his mind.

“That’s a long drive, so my resolution would be to make it to Pennsylvania safely. My girl and my son are making the drive with me, so I want all of us to get there without incident.”

Portales’ Antonio Gonzalez, an avid weightlifter, ties his resolution to his fitness.

“I want to be able to bench 250 (pounds) by the end of 2015,” Gonzalez said. “I can bench 225 now, but I want to get bigger.”

Mary Reed, a 65-year-old former teacher in Albuquerque who lives in Portales now, plans to see family this year.

“I’ve been avoiding it for years,” said Reed, who taught English. “My son and daughter live in Florida and Virginia so I told them I’m going to visit each one of them for a week. They’ll be my vacations for a year.”
