County manager lays out legislative priorities

Staff report

The New Mexico Legislature will convene on Jan. 15 for a 60-day session. Curry County Manager Lance Pyle said the county has five capital outlay fund requests for improvements to the county.

The county’s top priority is a $10 million request for Curry County Detention Center improvements. Pyle said improvements include adding additional housing units for special needs and maximum-security inmates.

The second priority is a $3.5 million request for the Curry County Fair Grounds and Event Center. Pyle said the plan is to add covered horse stalls, complete an asphalt parking lot, add recreational vehicle spaces and begin renovations to existing buildings.

Other requests in order of priority:

3. $1.75 million for roads improvements.

4. $250,000 to help address water infrastructure needs in southern Curry County.

5. $1.5 million for courthouse improvements. The funds would be used to add two district courtrooms for jury trials, expand the sheriff’s offices and improve the heating and cooling systems.

Pyle said the county is also asking the Legislature to reduce speed limits on some county roads. The limit is 75 now, which Pyle said is an unsafe speed.
