Local groups plan state centennial anniversary events

The state of New Mexico turns 100 today and statewide celebrations will be going on all weekend in commemoration of this historical centennial.

In Portales, the history class at Portales Junior High plans to throw New Mexico a grand birthday party next week with cake and ice cream and the students will play New Mexico state bingo.

In addition to the many events that Santa Fe will have, the New Mexico History Museum will feature hand-written letters from legendary outlaw Billy the Kid to Gov. Lew Wallace asking for a pardon.

In case people miss out, these next few days won’t be the only events dedicated to the celebration of New Mexico’s statehood.

The Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce is planning events throughout the year, including their celebration of Heritage Day in June.
