PNT columnist wins press awards

Portales News-Tribune columnist Wendel Sloan won two first-place awards and one second-place award in the state New Mexico Press Women column competition.

Sloan took first in “Humorous Columns” and “General Columns,” and second in “Opinion Columns.”

The humorous columns were “Embellishing inherited family trait” and “Let’s give grads real advice.”

The general columns were “Mother’s love always unwavering” and “Imagine lyrics updated.”

The opinion columns were “Politicians’ sincerity suspect” and “Give Green Tea Party a chance.”

The awards are scheduled to be presented at the NMPW state conference in Las Cruces on April 8-9, and will then advance to the national competition. The National Federation of Press Women Conference is set for September in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
