Representative trying for impact statement

State Rep. Roberto Gonzalez, D-Taos, is trying to force the U.S. Air Force to produce a full environmental impact statement on Cannon Air Force Base’s proposed low-altitude training area.

Gonzalez has introduced a joint memorial on the topic to the state legislature.

In a Taos News story, Gonzalez says he is responding to concerns of his constituents in Taos County.

The Air Force is in the process of performing an environmental assessment of northern New Mexico and southern Colorado to determine its viability as a training area for Ospreys and AC-130s.

An environmental impact report is more in-depth than an environmental assessment and could delay any action for two years.
