Police: Man arrested for possessing burglary tools

A Clovis man was arrested for possession of burglary tools early Tuesday morning in Portales, according to Portales police.

Deputy Chief Lonnie Berry said an officer found a Suburban sitting outside a business on U.S. 70 about 2:50 a.m. Tuesday. The officer thought he saw someone get out of the car.

When the officer spoke to the driver, the woman said she was trying to get back to Clovis and then drove down the road to Wal-Mart, Berry said.

The officer remained at the business and noticed someone lying on the ground behind a fence. When he investigated, he discovered David Sharp, 40, of Clovis and what the officer judged to be burglary tools, Berry said.

The police report lists the tools as a roofing hammer, a crowbar, a metal pry bar, a pair of gloves and two flashlights.

Sharp was arrested on a charge of possession of burglary tools, a fourth-degree felony, and taken to Roosevelt County Detention Center. He was released Wednesday morning on a $5,000 cash or surety bond.

Sharp did not return a phone call requesting comment.
