Rams cruise to 3A championship

It’s a December to remember for the Portales Rams.

The Rams scored on six of their first seven drives, and never trailed en route to a 48-10 Class 3A state championship win over District 4-3A rival Lovington Saturday at Greyhound Stadium.

Portales (10-3) claimed its fourth championship in school history and first since 1988.

Senior quarterback Michael Trujillo spread the ball around all day, throwing to seven different receivers for six touchdowns, and ran for a 1-yard keeper to put Portales’ first points on the board.

The Rams posted 528 yards of offense.

The win avenges a 17-14 loss at Lovington (9-4) earlier this season and breaks a 12-year winning streak by the Wildcats against Portales (10-3).

Portales’ other losses came to Class 4A champion Goddard and Muleshoe, Texas, which will be playing for a Class 2A state championship this weekend.
