Local man indicted

A Roosevelt County man was indicted by a grand jury Monday on multiple felony charges in connection with the sexual assault of a 17-year-old female on May 23, according to a press release from the District Attorney’s office.

Rigoberto Gonzalez, 38, is charged with one count of kidnapping, one count of criminal sexual penetration, three counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor, one count of possession of a controlled subsistence (cocaine) and one count of interference with communication, according to the release.

According to the release, the Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Office was called on May 23 after a female flagged down a motorist on Roosevelt Road 8 and said she had been raped.

While the motorist was driving the victim to the hospital, the victim saw her alleged attacker driving through town, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office. The motorist aided sheriff’s officers in making the arrest by keeping the vehicle in sight until officers arrived.

If convicted on all chargers, Gonzalez faces 74 1/2 years in prison and $66,000 in fines, according to the District Attorney’s office.

Gonzalez is being held in Roosevelt County Detention Center on a $70,000 bond.

He is also on Immigration and Customs Enforcement hold.
