  • Whiny, short-sighted commentary Christmas tradition

    Kevin Wilson

Local columnist I hear a lot of the protests of Christmas season, and find them to be short-sighted whining, finding the convenient problem with everybody else. • “What’s wrong with kids these days? They’re asking for PlayStation 4, iPhones and iPads. Wow, when I was their age, I got toy guns and dolls and I didn’t complain one bit. Spoiled brats are what’s wrong with America.” I grew up with that guy; he got a $600 PlayStation and was upset he only got “Resident Evil” and “NFL Gameday” to go with it. • “The problem with e...

Staff report The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service will begin surveying farmland owners to measure financial impacts and challenges of land ownership. Landowners will begin receiving forms for the survey, called Tenure, Ownership, and Transition of Agricultural Land (TOTAL), by the end of December, according to a department news release. According to the release: • TOTAL is a part of the Census of Agriculture program, which means the response to this survey is mandatory. • The TOTAL...

  • News and notes: Williams happy record out of way

    Dave Wagner

Staff writer Clovis High senior Danni Williams was happy to commit early for a college basketball career. She feels the same way about breaking the Lady Wildcats’ career scoring record. The 5-foot-10 guard, who has signed to play at Texas A&M, tallied 77 points in three games in a span of just more than 24 hours in Canyon’s Tournament of Champions over the weekend, giving her 1,728 points. Former CHS standout Antiesha Brown, now at the University of New Mexico, had the record at 1,662 from 2006-10. “I always wanted to break...

  • Good customer service part of manager's job

Local columnist I was planning to host an event and there was a great location I had in mind for it. I went to speak to the building manager to see if it could be arranged. When I arrived in the manager’s office she was typing on the computer. She didn’t look up to acknowledge me. I stood there for a few moments before speaking. “Hi, how are you?” I said, trying my best to be cordial. I introduced myself and said I needed to speak with someone about using the facility. The manager kept typing, never looking away from her com...

  • Former judge still has hurdles to overcome

Guest columnist Democracy, rule by the people, and the rule of law don’t always see eye-to-eye. In the case of Tenth District Court Judge Albert Mitchell, there seems to be some conflict between these two foundations of our civic life. “The people” often must be defined as the people who vote, and in the last general election, the turnout was about 45 percent of eligible voters. A slim majority — a little less than 51 percent — voted against retaining Mitchell as judge. To be retained, however, he would have needed 57 percent...

  • AG: Sheriff's contract may have been improper

Projects Editor [email protected] New Mexico’s attorney general contends Curry County Sheriff Matt Murray’s 2013 consultant contract at the jail may have been improper. The opinion, issued Nov. 21 in the form of a letter to state Sen. Stuart Ingle of Portales, concludes the $3,000 a month contract approved by Curry County commissioners may have violated the state’s Governmental Conduct Act. First, the opinion says, is because it wasn’t advertised for bids and Murray didn’t disclose his substantial interest. Second is...

  • Lawmaker: Capital outlay projects will take biggest hit from revenue change

Managing Editor [email protected] Oil was $30 a barrel when Stuart Ingle was elected to the state Senate in 1985. He also recalls the price plummeted to $4 a barrel a short time later. New Mexico relies heavily on taxes and royalties from energy production, so a drop in oil prices means a drop in revenue — a $1 change in oil prices causes a $7.5 million change in revenue, according to Finance and Administration Secretary Tom Clifford. “It’s happened before and it will happen again,” said Ingle, a Roosevelt County rancher...

Those who knew her said she was a friend to many, a catalyst for city development and “Aunt Zala” to countless people she...

  • Water authority back to drawing board on executive director

Staff report The Eastern New Mexico Water Utility Authority has gone back to the drawing board on finding an executive director. James Blasing of Pueblo, Colorado, whom the authority had hoped to hire to the new position, withdrew his name from consideration about a week ago. The authority met Tuesday morning in executive session, but took no action following the 45-minute session. Authority Chair Gayla Brumfield said Blasing called her to inform her of the decision, and she has since corresponded with him via email....

  • Feeling like Christmas after all

Publisher link Robert Arrowsmith It has been a mixed bag this past week. I wanted to buy $100 worth of donuts from a store to give to their customers as a goodwill gesture. Yes I saw down-the-road potential, but that was not what this was about directly. Got shot down; didn’t even want to hear that I wanted to buy $100 worth of donuts. Solution: I hope you enjoyed your coffee at Coffee Bistro on Tuesday. Keep reading for other days around the area where I will be feeling l...
