  • No luck chatting with local wildlife

    Karl Terry, Columnist|Updated Nov 20, 2018

I talk to the animals. That’s right, in case you don’t read my column regularly you might not know that. Of course if you see me on the Eastern New Mexico University campus hollering up into the trees, I haven’t flipped my lid, I’m just talking to the squirrels. I do it on my way to and from my aqua fitness class. Although I speak fluent squirrel, I believe these carpetbagging squirrels quite possibly speak a different squirrel dialect than I learned during my time in Colorad... Full story

  • Clovis tops racino feasibility study

    David Grieder|Updated Nov 17, 2018

CLOVIS — In spite of some noted opposition, horse racetrack and casino proposals in Clovis are expected to bring more new dollars to New Mexico than either of the proposals in two other cities, according to a feasibility study recently completed for the New Mexico Racing Commission. The commission contracted the Convergence Strategy Group to examine the five applications for the state's sixth racino license in relation to the communities in which the projects would be established. The ensuing report, updated Thursday, f... Full story

The Staff of The News|Updated Nov 17, 2018

The company expansion, done through the Clovis Industrial Development Corporation, creates 10 new positions at the south Clovis plant. "When we lower taxes, cut through bureaucratic red tape and strengthen our incentives, companies choose New Mexico," Martinez said in a release. "Cummins is staying and growing in New Mexico. They are providing fantasti...

CLOVIS — A Clovis man faces up to 3 1/2 years in prison after being convicted last week of his sixth DWI offense. A Curry County jury found Gerardo Vasquez, 43, guilty of third-degree felony "driving while under the influence of intoxication liquor — 6th offense," and a misdemeanor, according to a news release from the 9th Judicial District Attorney. He faces up to 42 months in prison, with Judge Matthew Chandler ordering sentencing at a later date. District Attorney Andrea Reeb said she hopes Chandler will pursue the max...

  • Curry, Roosevelt schools make passing grades

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Nov 17, 2018

The good news for Curry County and Roosevelt County public schools on Thursday? Everybody passed, although some — see Melrose — finished a little better than others. The bad news? It wasn’t quite honor roll-level good, with the C’s outnumbering the A’s. Melrose received the area’s only A, while four schools — Elida, Dora, Grady and Texico — received B’s. Clovis, Portales and Floyd received C’s. A detailed report for each school is listed at aae.ped.state.nm.us. • Clovis (C): Three of the 16 schools rated in the Clovis s...

  • Grady grad national champion meat judge

The Staff of The News|Updated Nov 17, 2018

DAKOTA CITY, Neb. — A 2016 Grady High School graduate went from judging meat as a kid in 4-H and FFA to last week becoming a national champion in the field. Koby Valentine, a junior at Texas Tech University who grew up between Clovis and Melrose, was named reserve grand champion last week at the 2018 American Meat Science Association International Meat Judging Contest in Dakota City, Nebraska. Valentine said there were over 100 students from 19 universities nationwide taking part in the competition. “It’s a great honor and h...

  • Opinion: That time the flu kept us all home

    David Stevens, Editor|Updated Nov 17, 2018

Remember that time when nobody was allowed to go to restaurants or to school or even to the movies? Fortunately, none of us are old enough to remember. But that’s what happened 100 years ago. Clovis was among cities that actually passed a law forbidding large numbers of people from gathering anywhere. The flu in 1918 was that bad. Health officials estimate it killed 20 million people worldwide in an 18-month period, thanks in part to troop movements during World War I. A...

  • Opinion: Take your time, just get it right

    Kevin Wilson, Managing Editor|Updated Nov 17, 2018

A few election cycles ago, a reporter turned in an election story. The story included everything you’d expect. Vote tallies. Quotes from the winners. Quotes from the runnersup — at least the ones whose cell phones didn’t mysteriously straight to voicemail. Ended with notes about the turnout, and that the election still needed to be certified by the county commission. Another sentence appeared, noting that vote totals weren’t available until after 9 p.m. because of a mechanical error at the clerk’s office. “Who,” I...

  • Opinion: Extend a hand, not a hammer

    Steve Hansen, Columnist|Updated Nov 17, 2018

First, let me congratulate Democrats for taking the U.S. House of Representatives from the Republicans. Whether that is good news, however, depends on what the party whose standard bearer is not a septuagenarian pre-adolescent does with its new-found power. I would request that the Democrats do not use their new-found hammer to take revenge, even if that means putting a lid on U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters, D-California, who has shown herself to be as immoderate as a leftist as the near-extremists on the right who are emboldened...

  • Water officials: Construction of pipeline on track

    David Grieder|Updated Nov 17, 2018
    1

TEXICO — As construction on an interim groundwater pipeline is on track to start by year's end, board members of The Eastern New Mexico Water Utility authority last week were hopeful to keep that momentum going. "We could be on the cusp of putting out a bid package for Fixed Water 3 in twelve to 24 months," ENMWUA Chair David Lansford said in a meeting Thursday in Texico. Lansford referred to the next phase of the long-reaching project to connect local communities with Quay C...

  • Police stand off with kidnapping suspect

    David Grieder|Updated Nov 17, 2018

CLOVIS — A SWAT team response and evacuation/lockdown on properties near the Clovis Apartments on Wednesday ended with the arrest of a Clovis man accused of kidnapping. Cesar Murillo, 38, was accused of holding a woman "against her will at gunpoint" in her apartment on the 1000 block of North Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, according to court records. By Friday, however, court records showed the kidnapping charge was quashed as "additional investigation is needed in this m...

  • School board updated on district building projects

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Nov 17, 2018

CLOVIS — Though it wasn't listed among the baker's dozen of action and discussion items on the agenda for the Clovis Municipal Schools Board of Education meeting Tuesday night, Deputy Superintendent of Operations Carrie Bunce provided an update on several of the district's construction projects. Bunce said the projected completion date of October for the high school's tennis courts was delayed because the surface of the courts needs to be applied when temperatures are 50 d...

  • Opinion: Thanks for the pickin', grinnin' and 'Yesterday'

The Eastern New Mexico News|Updated Nov 17, 2018

For those of us old enough to remember when television brought families together — in the same room at the same time, with commercial interruption because that was the only choice back then — Thursday was a sad day. Roy Clark died. He was country, the song goes, when country wasn’t cool, back when Tammy Wynette was standing by her man. But he was more than a singer, more than a gifted entertainer. He was a generation’s best friend, maybe your dad’s buddy from work or a local cotton farmer who chose to spend his Saturday night...

  • Opinion: Rule could bring more transparency to drug prices

    Albuquerque Journal|Updated Nov 17, 2018

Whether you lean red or blue when it comes to politics, everyone should demand clarity when it comes to costs. And a draft rule now working its way through the halls of our federal government promises to bring a little clarity to the opaque subject of health care. Sure, it’s coming from the Trump administration, but critics should keep in mind their local pharmacy doesn’t take voter registration into account when it rings up prescriptions. Then the only color that matters is green. Health and Human Services Secretary Ale...

  • Clovis approves new collective bargaining agreement with police

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Nov 17, 2018

CLOVIS — The Clovis City Commission on Thursday approved a new collective bargaining agreement with the Clovis Police Department, in most ways similar to the existing framework. With no discussion and by a 7-0 vote — Helen Casaus was absent — the commission gave the go-ahead to the contract. The deal between the city and the Clovis Police Officers Association — the collective bargaining group for the CPD employees — runs through Aug. 15, 2021. City Manager Justin Howalt said the agreement was largely the same as before, with...

  • Jury convicts sex offender after mistrial

The Staff of The News|Updated Nov 17, 2018

CLOVIS —A sex-crime case ending in mistrial earlier this year resulted in a conviction last week. Glenn Gumbrecht, 56, of Clovis, was found guilty of third-degree felony criminal sexual penetration following a two-day trial before Judge Matthew Chandler, according to a news release from District Attorney Andrea Reeb. Testimony included law enforcement, a DNA lab analyst, a sexual assault nurse examiner and the victim, who told police in July last year that Gumbrecht "had forced himself sexually on her." He faces up to t...
