Our people: A hippie at heart

My name is Brian Berry. I own Back Road Designs where I do everything from motorcycles to custom restorations and general fabrication. I consider myself a hippie at heart. I try to live as self sufficient as possible from raising and growing my own food to focusing on the simple joys in life. I put my family above anything else and believe in working to live and not living to work. I am a maker, there is nothing that I cannot create with my own hands. My wife Jena and I have three kids, daughters Emilee, 11, and Bria, 4, and son Colt, 1 month.

What would you do if you won $1 million?

I would buy a place in the middle of nowhere without a neighbor in sight and do my best to never go to town again.

What is your most prized possession?

My most prized possessions are my motorcycles that I have handcrafted from stock or built from the ground up. I have always had an appreciation for items built by hand as it takes quite a bit of skill to not only construct but to also create something unique. I take pride in the fact that I have been able to accomplish that in my work but in my mind each project always has the opportunity to evolve.

What's your idea of a perfect day?

I love an early morning with coffee. No good day is complete without a motorcycle ride and it's always good to end it off with a few beers with the one you love and a few close friends.

What does your garden grow?

My garden is always my favorite part of summer. Each year I try to grow bigger and more efficient. This summer we ate zucchini almost every dinner. Many of our meals are 100 percent from our own small farm that includes pork, beef and our vegetables. This year we also grew squash, okra, tomatoes, green beans, peppers, carrots and corn.

How would you like to be remembered?

My legacy is my children. I want them to remember what kind of man I was and the skills I will teach them. I hope their talent surpasses mine and my knowledge is just a stepping stone to the achievements they will accomplish.

Favorite quote?

"Ride fast, take chances." I don't know where the quote came from, it's just something that stuck with me. I have tried to live my life by this motto. No one has ever accomplished anything amazing by playing it safe.

What do you hope your life will be like in 10 years?

In 10 years I see myself trying to keep up with my son on dirt bikes, swamped with sporting activities with my youngest daughter and trying to hold it together while my oldest daughter is getting ready to leave the house. I hope me and wife are having our craziest adventures yet.

Tell us about your favorite hobby.

I love to work in my shop. I have built several motorcycles, hot rods and customs from the ground up. The best part of building motorcycles and fast cars is the joy of experiencing the project once completed and pushing it to the limit. I love new challenges, learning new skills and making each thing I build better than the last.

Who is the most important person in your life?

My wife. She is my best friend and loyal companion in all of life's adventures. She has supported me and taken care of me in ways I didn't know was possible Our relationship is the strongest thing I know. She would do anything for me and I her.
